Fast Drying. Waterproof. Medium Blue

I'm a relative newbie, gradually figuring out what I like and want. I do a lot of relatively small lettering, so I have settled on EF nibs only. But with some inks, like the beautiful Liberty's Elysium, (and now this Legal Blue) I cannot get an EF line to save my life: it's a nice clean line, but it looks like it's coming from an F or M nib. Which may be fine for some, but I want a tight, EF line. In short, I'm not doing a full review: I'm basically testing for just three things: (1) WATERPROOF. I've come to believe ink should be permanent. But I don't do my own drip tests: Goulet's online tests are perfect. (2) DRIES. Some inks, (Ottoman Azure, Noodler's Navy) are still sticky at the top of the page when I get to the bottom. I have to close the journal with a kleenex blotter between pages. (of course, different papers behave differently)(3) TIGHT EF LINE: No inks that make an EF look like F or M.All my tests are in a Quo Vadis Habana / smooth 90 gsm dot journal, with a Noodler's Ahab / Goulet EF nib. Noodler's Legal Blue. This is an attractive medium blue, neither tipping towards violet nor turquoise. Some shading, but not a leading feature. [x] Waterproof [x] dries. And how. This ink is one of the fastest driers I've ever used. If you want a fast drier, check this one out.[-] EF line. Not at all. My EF nib is putting down a line that looks like an M. For my purposes, that takes Noodler's Legal Blue off my list. But if you really want a medium blue that is waterproof and dries as fast as anything, give it a look.

It spreads

I bought a sample of Legal Blue for use at work in my Pilot Decimo fine nib. It looks like a beefy medium nib on Rhodia paper. I'm disappointed and won't be buying a bottle of it. I'll try using it up somehow where a thick line is acceptable.

Nice color but spreads

Color is nice bright blue, elegant, and very waterproof. The main problem is that it spread quite a lot and feathers on normal paper (I tried on Moleskin notebook and Mead notebook; cannot say paper quality is low).

Nice blue

I have this in a Jinhao x750 and it writes pretty broad. I tried Apache Sunset in the same pen and it writes thinner so it's definitely the ink. I like the color because it's not a typical royal blue but a dark sky blue but it doesn't really have shading. I tried on Leuchtturm1917 and Rhodia and on Stalogy paper. All of these seem to absorb it a little. Still nice color, waterproof, minimal if any feathering. I'll give it another chance in a different pen/finer nib. I can't knock stars for shading or how it writes in one pen.

Noodler's Legal Blue

A very well-performing permanent blue. This ink sample was quite a bit brighter and more vibrant than the pictured sample, or the first sample I purchased. This is what one expects with hand-produced batches, though. Otherwise, a very good blue to use around the office, or in my Conklin Crescent filler, hence the name. The dry time is phenomenal on Original Crown Mill Stationery. Good job, Noodler's.

FAQ about Ink Samples

How do I fill my fountain pen from an ink sample vial? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It depends on the fountain pen's filling mechanism.

Check out our blog post on How to Fill a Fountain Pen from an Ink Sample Vial.

How much writing can I do with 2ml of ink? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It really depends on how big or small you write, and the nib size you’re using. We find that usually you can get 2 good fills for a typical converter with our Ink samples, or one good fill with a piston-filling pen. How much writing depends on you more than anything else, so we recommend experimenting with different nib sizes to find what works best for you.

What is shading, sheening, or shimmering ink? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

Shading - A common (and often desired) result of a fountain pen ink pooling in certain parts of a letter when writing, so that the color and saturation of the ink appears different within a single letter or word. This characteristic cannot be achieved with ballpoint or rollerball pens and is a very appealing aspect of fountain pen use for those particularly drawn to all the pretty ink colors.

Sheen - Characteristic of a fountain pen ink where when ink pools another color can be seen on top of the ink, especially when looked at in different light angles using certain paper types. There is no way to guarantee an ink will sheen, but using a larger nib on a pen will help obtain sheening results in your writing.

Shimmering - Fountain pen ink that has small particles of glitter mixed in.

Is shimmering ink safe to use in fountain pens? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

Yes! Shimmering ink is a great way to add some flare to your writing. We have found that a larger nib will showcase more shimmering particles while writing, but you can use any nib size and shimmering ink. All the ink we sell is safe for use in fountain pens.

You can learn more in our blog: How to Write with Shimmering Ink.
