Monteverde MVP Fountain Pen - Red Puzzles
The Monteverde MVP fountain pen is a tiny pocket pen! This fountain pen features a flecked red resin body with chrome accents and a #5 steel nib. It fills via standard international short cartridge, or fill the entire barrel with ink with an eyedropper or syringe. An o-ring helps create a tight seal. The cap screws securely onto the back of the barrel of the pen when posted, extending the length to make it comfortable in hand.
The Monteverde MVP fountain pen collection was inspired by modern art and its minimalist movement. The color selection of the resins were created by mixing a multitude of colors to focus on the architectural shapes which create a vivid and energizing effect. The MVP (aka Monteverde Pocket Pen) is highly versatile and a perfect match to a jean's pocket, a purse, an agenda or a desk.
Being miniature in size, the MVP fountain pen uses reliable international short cartridges, and as a bonus, it is also an eyedropper pen. Included with the pen is an eyedropper for filling system (5ml pipette). The benefit of filling the barrel via eyedropper/pipette is an extra ink capacity that prolongs the duration of writing.

What a great little pen. First of all it's much prettier than the photographs. Several of the resins are translucent, some a slight shimmer while some are solid providing a nice visual contrast. The pen is almost long enough to write uncapped for a quick note. The cap twists on easily to the base and the clip aligns with the nib. It's honestly one of my best writing pens. The stub nib is wet without flooding the paper and lays down a nice enough line of Sailor 123 ink that even on cheap paper a bit of shading can be seen. I really love this nib! I bought this for my purse but need to buy another one for that use, as this one now lives in my bedside table. I eye dropper filled the pen and it's performing wonderfully. The translucent bits of the marbling allow you to check on the ink level! It's always great to get a new fountain pen but even better when it's surpassing expectations at such a low price!
I bought this Monteverde MVP mini-pen after eyeing it for several months. It's inexpensive, the marbled red and blue color is attractive, and the pen is a decent writer. I got the fine nib, and the line is comparable to many other fine points, and puts down a decent amount of ink. The nib is stiff; an omniflex should give more flexibility and line variation. I have only used the MVP with standard short international cartridges; I saw one reviewer experienced leaking when using the pen as an eyedropper fill. I didn't trust the seal to try! With small pocket pens I always put them into a leather sleeve to protect the finish, because I can see keys and loose change really scratching the finish.
First impressions: the MVP looks great. This mix of colours is very rich, with pearlescent and translucent patches that allow a glimpse of the ink inside (when used as an eyedropper), which most photos don't capture. The merchandising is also very generous, especially given the price: it comes in a nice box, with a pipette and three ink cartridges in two colours, putting other brands to shame. The Omniflex nib was a pleasant surprise: when not being flexed, it's very fine, more so than a standard Lamy EF nib. (I prefer fine nibs, so this suits me down to the ground.) Getting some flex takes a bit of force, so it doesn't have the bounciness you'd get from a gold nib; still, it's nice to be able to create a flourish when you want that effect. I eye-droppered it with De Atramentis Brilliant Violet shimmer ink (to match the purple in the resin), and it did get a little messier than with a cartridge � especially around the bottom of the barrel, where the cap screws to post; that took a *lot* of extra cleaning, but not enough to put me off doing it again. The only downside, really, is that when posted, the clip does not align with the nib as advertised. Fortunately, it's rounded enough that it causes no discomfort when writing, but that's the only real defect. Overall, I would recommend this (over the Kaweco Sport, of which I'm a big fan) to anyone looking for a versatile, inexpensive pocket pen.
I was looking forward to this pocket pen. I usually use a Platinum Fine, so ordered an Extra Fine. Unfortunately the Monteverde Extra Fine is in fact much broader than a Platinum Fine. Otherwise the pen seems good. A final point is that the pen body is a little too big to fit in the pen loop of my planner.
Disclaimer: Goulet Pen Co. gives excellent service, my issue is with the pen only. I was excited for the flex nib on this moderately inexpensive pen. I looked at the writing samples showing the subtle but still noticeable stroke variation. When I inked up the pen and tried it out, it was a rock hard nib, with a thin, decidedly unvarying stroke, and an *almost* scratchy feel. I kept trying to give it a chance, but nothing about it was redeeming. It flowed, but not nicely. I set it aside and came back a few minutes later, and upon uncapping it, it had gushed ink through the nib. I had intentionally under filled the pen (eye dropper), and carefully closed it with the rubber ring in place after filling, so I was baffled at the outcome. I did lay it on its side for a few minutes, but I've never had a pen leak from just laying it on its side. I don't think it is well made, and I don't recommend it. Hence the Nope.

How do I fill a fountain pen with ink?
It depends on the pen's filling mechanism, which you can find in the Technical Specs section above.
Here's a quick definition of the most common filling mechanisms:
- Cartridge - A small, disposable, sealed plastic reservoir that holds fountain pen ink. These come pre-filled with ink, and typically you just push to insert them into place and you'll be ready to write! Check out our quick guide here.
- Converter - A detachable and refillable ink reservoir that allows you to use bottled ink in a cartridge-accepting pen. Typically you will install the converter into the grip section, dip the nib/feed into the ink, and twist or pull the converter knob to draw ink into the converter. - Eyedropper - A pen that utilizes the entire barrel as a reservoir for ink. Ink is directly filled into the barrel, allowing for a high ink capacity. Here's a video on how to do it!
- Piston - A type of filling system that uses a retracting plunger inside a sealed tube to draw ink into a pen. They are typically either twist or push-operated. These pens cannot accept cartridges or a converter, and only fill from bottled ink.
- Vacuum - A push-style piston that uses pressure to fill the large pen body with ink. They seal the ink chamber when closed, making it ideal for flying without risk of leaking. Check out our video on how to use a vac filler here.

How do I clean a fountain pen?
It depends on the filling mechanism, but it mostly comes down to flushing it out with water, and sometimes a little bit of Pen Flush if the ink is really stuck.
It's a bit easier to show than to tell, so we've put together a few quick videos showing you the process:
How often do I need to clean my fountain pen?
We recommend a good cleaning every 2 weeks, and any time you change ink colors.
Water will usually do the trick, but we recommend you use our Goulet Pen Flush if the ink has been left in the pen for a while and could have dried up, or when you’re switching ink colors.
My pen won’t write! What do I do?
First things first... make sure you have ink in the pen! Be sure that the ink cartridge or converter is seated properly in the pen, and that you aren't out of ink.
We always recommend you give your pen a good cleaning first, using our Goulet Pen Flush, or a drop of dish soap in some water. New pens often have some machining oil residue left in the feed, so a good cleaning often does the trick first.
If that still doesn't work, try priming the feed. This consists of either dipping your pen nib and feed in ink, or forcing ink from the converter down into the feed.
