Mixed Success

I have two of these both of which are in Pilot Custom 74 Pens. One has worked fine with good and steady flow of ink and the second one not so much. The issue I am having with the second one is that ink will completely stop flowing to the nib unit. When this happens a quick up and down shake clears the blockage. I don't know if a vacuum develops, or a problem with the ink (Caran d'Ache vibrant green). For what it's worth, I have seen other reviews (not on this site) that also experienced the same issue.

Super convenient with lots of ink

I was a little afraid about this converter given some of the reviews, but I could ignore the ink capacity in a Japanese pen. I now have a bunch of Pilots with these converters in them and they are miles ahead of other converters. Huge ink capacity and super quick filling. Filling is so easy if you make sure to submerge bellow the filler hole. Using it with more temperamental or maintenance heavy inks would probably be more annoying, as you can't really clean them out as easily, but otherwise, this is a great converter.

FAQs about Converters

What is a converter? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

A converter is a cartridge-shaped reservoir that allows you to use bottled fountain pen ink, when a cartridge would otherwise be your only option. Fountain pens that have this option are usually referred to as a cartridge/converter pen, or C/C for short.

What pens accept a converter? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

These fountain pens all take a converter. Please check the individual product descriptions for if the pen needs a proprietary or standard converter.

You can also check out our Cartridge/Converter Compatibility Guide for general brand guidance.

How do I use a converter? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

A converter goes in the place of where the ink cartridge would normally go.

How do I clean a converter pen? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

You can clean a converter by flushing it out with water, the same way you would use it to fill your pen, but instead of ink you’re just using water or a Pen Flush
