Sailor Yurameku Sukigokoro: Ink Review

From the Sailor Yurameku fountain pen ink collection, we have the stunning Sukigokoro. This ink is truly a treat as it goes down a slate blue and dries to a green/brown — with the right paper you're rewarded with a beautiful red sheen. Read the full review below to learn more! 

Ink Review 

Supplies Used:

• LAMY AL-star with medium steel nib
• Rhodia No. 16 dot pad, 80g white paper
• Tomoé River 52 gsm white paper
• Leuchtturm1917 80g notebook

Smear Test (Dry Time):

• 25 seconds – Quite a long dry time on this ink but it is well worth it! As you write, you can see the ink change colors slowly as it dries down. Dry time is longer on Tomoe River paper as well. This is one of the slower drying inks we've reviewed in a while so just keep that in mind when you pick up a sample! 

Drip Test (Water Resistance):

• Medium – This really came as a surprise. The drip test didn't totally wash away the ink and the smear test pulled some color from the ink, but we are left with an almost legible line. It's rare for an ink with these kinds of properties to survive water! It's not enough to call it water-resistant but still a solid showing.

Saturation:

• High – You can definitely see the colors here! Sukigokoro has strong saturation throughout its varied range of colors and it makes for a very legible line that features a gorgeous gradient of color.

Ease of Cleaning:

• Easy – We've found that most Sailor inks clean up quite easily and Sukigokoro was no exception. As always, make sure you don't let it dry up in the pen! 

Shading:

• High – A lovely treat. This ink has gorgeous shading that goes from a dry-grass green down to a dark brown with reddish tone. It delivers a multichromatic feel to individual letters and whole words that makes it feel like art on the page.

Flow:

• High – Sukigokoro wants to write. It will almost jump out of the pen and its flow aids in creating that lovely shading, and with the right paper, a lovely dark red sheen. Out of the LAMY medium nib, it was really moving! 

 Packaging and Aesthetics:

• All of Sailor's ink bottles are gorgeous and the Yurameku 20ml glass bottles are no exception. It's both cute and elegant — with a label that wraps around the corner, it gives you two different faces to display on your desk or ink shelf.

Summary:

Sailor Yurameku Sukigokoro was a pleasant surprise to test out. It will definitely be in rotation moving forward. It is reminiscent of some other beautiful Sailor inks like Rikyucha and Tokiwa-matsu but cranked up to 11. With the use of different paper the ink can appear in varying shades of green, blue, and brown. It's truly a special ink and a perfect addition to the Yurameku line. With wet flow, great shading, and a touch of sheen, we hope you will be pleasantly surprised as well!
