Ink Review

Supplies Used:

Smear Test (Dry Time):

  • 10 seconds – This was surprising! Usually inks with this kind of saturation will take a bit longer to dry but Hanagokoro had little to no smearing after just ten seconds on the page.

Drip Test (Water Resistance):

  • Low – While the line wasn't completely removed, the majority of the lovely dark color was removed. You're left with a faint blue line, which is more than nothing. It's certainly not water-resistant in any functional way though.

Saturation:

  • High– You can see swabs one through three are all quite dark and rich in color. On Rhodia and Tomoe River paper you get some lovely shading and a plum coloration. On Leuchtturm1917 you get a more monotone blue shade

Ease of Cleaning:

  • Easy – Even with it's dark color and sheen potential, this ink was very easy to clean from the pen. No issues here.

Shading:

  • High – For a dark ink, the shading is remarkably high. The darker the ink the less room you have to showcase shading but Hanagokoro shows a dark lavender in the light spots and rich plum color with red sheen in the darker bits.

Flow:

  • Medium – The darker colors from Sailor are not nearly as dry as some of the traditional light colors. Hanagokoro is solidly in the middle with a metered flow that's neither too wet or too dry. It will work nicely in most nib sizes and pens.

 Packaging and Aesthetics:

  • Sailors Yurameku bottles are both beautiful and functional. You get a corner placed sticker so you have two sides you can face out, and the faceted black cap is a nice touch.

The coloration is dark enough for work or school usage and the performance on various types of paper can give you some fun effects to play with. This beautiful color can yield lovely shading and a red sheen that combines with its deep purple hue to deliver a wonderfully pleasant range. We hope you enjoy it!
