Ink Review
Supplies Used:
- LAMY AL-star with medium steel nib
- Rhodia No. 16 dot pad, 80g white paper
- Tomoé River 52 gsm white paper
- Leuchtturm1917 80g notebook
Smear Test (Dry Time):
- ~20 Seconds – We found this ink had a pretty short dry time despite it's saturation and it was completely dry by 25 seconds in.
Drip Test (Water Resistance):
- Low – Beware rain or spilt tea with this ink, it doesn't hold up super well to water though the dye components leave behind a light mint color that could be useful in water color art or water washes.
Saturation:
- High – From Swab 1 to 3 Edwards Gardens is pretty saturated and outside of the line of sheen where the next swab starts you don't see much in the way of definition between each.
Ease of Cleaning:
- Medium-High – Like most shimmering inks the gold shimmer can be stubborn and may require a soft older toothbrush to scrub out the fins. The Teal color is not prone to staining but can take a bit longer to clean until the water runs clear.
Shading:
- Medium – This teal definitely has a bit of shading and variation on the loops and cross-strokes in letters that errs from lighter to deeper teal. Accented with the sheen and shimmer you get a gorgeous complex color.
Flow:
- Wet – Regardless of the paper we used, this ink had a smooth flow and only felt feedback in more finely ground nibs. In all cases the line went down smoothly with no skipping.
Packaging and Aesthetics:
- Ferris Wheel Press ink bottles and their packaging are a thing of beauty. Designed to resemble a pocket-watch the glass bottle features custom art work with a signature hexagonal brass cap. The outer box has the aesthetics of vintage perfume packaging, too. The neck is narrow so using an ink syringe may help to get the best fill for your pen.
Edwards Gardens reminds us a lot of Jacques Herbin 1670 Emerald of Chivor. If you're interested in looking at other similar colors, check out our Swab Shop where you can compare colors side by side.
Summary:
Perfect for a garden party invitation, Ferris Wheel Press Edwards Gardens is a complex teal with lots of personality. Saturated with red sheen and gold shimmer we recommend giving this ink a try!
