De Atramentis Brilliant Violet Copper: Ink Review

De Atramentis Brilliant Violet Copper ink splatter and LAMY AL-star

Hello everyone! This week I had the opportunity to try out one of the new De Atramentis Pearlescent Copper inks. These inks are similar to shimmer inks we've before, but the shimmer particles are copper instead of gold or silver like we've seen in the past. This ink definitely stood out in my opinion!

Supplies Used:

Smear Test (Dry Time):

  • About 25 seconds– The ink stopped smearing between 20 and 30 seconds, so it's safe to say it was dry around 25 seconds. It barely smeared at 20 seconds though, so it was getting close at that point.

Drip Test (Water Resistance):

  • Medium – While the color smeared, you could still see line after the water was dropped, so the ink has some water resistance to it.

Saturation:

  • High – We saw no difference between the 3 swabs.

Ease of Cleaning:

  • Low – The shimmer in this ink was pretty fine and wasn't super easy to clean out of my pen. We had to remove my nib and feed to get it cleaned out, and it took a number of flushes to get it out of the rest of the pen. The saturation of the purple also contributed to how hard it was to clean out.

Shading:

  • Low – We don't see any shading with the ink.

Flow:

  • Medium – The ink flowed pretty well out of my nib, but we wouldn't say it went down super wet.

Packaging and Aesthetics:

  • The De Atramentis bottles are pretty simple in appearance, and they don't come packaged in a box.

Inks Similar in Color:

J. Herbin Amethyste de l'Oural
Rohrer and Klingner Cassia

Summary:
The purple hue of this ink is so pretty, and  the copper shimmer really complimented it. It was a bit of a pain to clean out of my pen afterwards, and it took some effort to get the shimmer out of my feed so we don't suggest this ink for anyone looking for something super low maintenance.
