About the Sailor Manyo collection:

Flowers have always been a popular poetic subject dating back to ancient Japanese history. This is the theme for Sailor's Manyo bottled ink series. Based on popular flowers frequently mentioned in Japanese “Manyoshu” – an anthology of compiled ancient poems – Sailor has chosen eight dye-based ink colors to best represent this vibrant palette range.

"Manyosyu" - Collection of Ten Thousand Leaves - is the oldest (c.759) and most revered anthology of Japan's poetic compilations. Over a period of four centuries, 4,516 poems were written by every class of person ranging from Emperors to merchants and farmers. "Manyo" is an abbreviation of "Manyosyu" and its meaning indicates people of all ranks.

"Manyosyu" is often regarded in Japan as a true expression of the Japanese spirit. The themes of the poems relate to love, elegies, nature, the seasons, and so on. Flowers are especially relevant in Japanese culture and about 1,500 of the poems in "Manyosyu" cover some 160 species of plants and 50 different flowers.

Think Methiolate

For anyone who grew up in the 60's, think Methiolate, that antiseptic mom used on your scraped knee. Debating to keep it or throw away, when I knocked it over. Money down the drain - literally and figuratively! Lol glad it was only a sample.

Best Peach Colour

This is the best peach colour I've found. It looks nice on ivory or white paper. Looks especially good on Rhodia paper where the grid lines are printed in orange. I just wish it was water resistant because it's very vulnerable to water and my home is very humid in the summertime.

coral

I love coral and this is a very pretty color of coral ink. I put it in a Medium TWSBI eco. However, it is a bit light to be useful for me. I have 10 pens inked up on my art/writing desk and this is the one I reach for the least. Perhaps I'll put it back in the sample tube and save it for a broad or stub nib.

Great color for decorating or drawing

This is a beautiful color which is very close to my impression on Sakura (Japanese cherry blossom). The color is a pale, pinkish coral and looks very delicate and fresh. As some other review mentioned, it looks very light on paper and might have some difficulties while used in long term writing. I used a Pilot Kakuno Fine nib which works perfect with Pilot or Sailor inks. When writing on a piece of paper with yellow undertone, it becomes more legible than writing on a sheet of pure white paper. I suggest those who cannot miss this beauty use it as: 1) highlighter, to underline or mark through notes; 2) ink for broader nibs or color with a cream tone to make it look more legible; or 3) use it to draw or decorate your bullet journal. I will purchase the ink as it is really captured the core beauty of Sakura.

Too light for me

Not for me - the flow was too slow compared to other inks, even some shimmer inks. The color is VERY light. It is a light, peachy pink which is beautiful - would be good for coloring but not for the writing I'm doing. The coral color I was looking for is better in Diamine Pink Champagne. Also, I noticed that the Diamine is consistently pigmented, but this Sailor ink actually separates into a pink and a yellow color (on a paper towel). I'd prefer the single pigment.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I fill my fountain pen from an ink sample vial? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

The technique depends on the fountain pen's filling mechanism.

How much writing can I really do with 2ml? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

We find that usually you can get 2 good fills for a typical converter with our ink samples, or one good fill with a large capacity piston-filling pen.

How much writing you can do depends on you more than anything else. It mostly depends on how big or small you write, and the nib size you’re using. We recommend experimenting with different nib sizes to find what works best for you.
