An excellent dark red ink that looks great on most paper

If you want a dark red ink to add to your collection, try this one out! I happen to love this color (which is a little warmer than Diamine Syrah but leans less orange/brown than Oxblood) and I think you will too. Maybe more importantly though, it looks great and works well on a wide variety of paper types and in a wide variety of pens. Will it look great on your 52g Tomoe River paper? Of course. Will it look great on a $3 floppy Muji notepad? For sure. It probably would even look good on some Meade college ruled paper if you so deigned. Stop reading this and just buy the sample already.

Basically Oxblood

I wrote a line in Oxblood and a line in Burgundy Royale right next to each other. I stared at them for 5 minutes. After that I can say with confidence that they are different inks, but I couldn't explain well what the difference was. It is very subtle, and not at all what I was expecting. For a truer burgundy, with an actual purple hue, try Diamine Syrah. I got a sample of that in the same shipment as this, and ordered an 80ml bottle not a week later.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I fill my fountain pen from an ink sample vial? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

The technique depends on the fountain pen's filling mechanism.

Check out our blog post on How to Fill a Fountain Pen from an Ink Sample Vial, or watch the video here:

How much writing can I really do with 2ml? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

We find that usually you can get 2 good fills for a typical converter with our ink samples, or one good fill with a large capacity piston-filling pen.

How much writing you can do depends on you more than anything else. It mostly depends on how big or small you write, and the nib size you’re using. We recommend experimenting with different nib sizes to find what works best for you.
