Since its launch in 2007, the Platinum Preppy fountain pen series has grown in popularity among a wide range of age groups around the world. The all new Platinum Prefounte is a model designed more for adults that boasts a sense of high quality while retaining the basic functions of Preppy fountain pen. Subdued colors are employed for the transparent body made of resin. The graphics are also kept simple, while the metal clip adds an accent to produce a chic, translucent appearance ideal for adults. The stainless steel nib features a welded tip made of an abrasion-resistant special alloy, which provides an excellent writing feel.

The Prefounte fountain pen is equipped with Platinum's “Slip & Seal Mechanism” that prevents ink from drying out in the pen with the cap on for one year. It accepts proprietary Platinum ink cartridges (one blue-black cartridge is included) or a Platinum converter (sold separately) to fill with bottled ink.

For those who seek a smart and casual fountain pen, the Prefounte is ideal for both business and daily use, as well as for fountain pen beginners.

By converting this pen to an eyedropper, you can fill the entire barrel with ink for maximum ink capacity! All you need to do is add an o-ring and a small amount of silicone grease to the threads (available separately).

Like a nicer preppy

I like these pens and have a few which replaced preppys. I think they feel better in hand and I have more confidence that the plastic won’t break.

Excellent!

My first Sailor, and I am very pleased! I'd rank it among my favorite pens, so far. I've had it about 3 weeks at this point, and it writes smoothly and can keep up with my rather fast writing. It has some of the pencil-like feedback I'd read Sailor nibs have, and I don't mind that. I enjoy good nibs of a variety of types so am not strongly for or against feedback as long as the nib writes smoothly and reliably. This pen does not hard start or skip. It's attractive, and I'm looking forward to finding a brown ink to match the transparent brown body. Not top heavy when posted, even for my small hands.

Sometimes things don't have to cost a ton to be amazing

Normally, I absolutely stand by the staing "you get what you pay for"... Assuming that quality comes at a higher price tag. But not with the Platinum Prefounte!! The older, more mature sibling of the Platinum Preppy. I LOVE THIS PEN. The red is a stunning deep ruby that reminds me of old time Depression era ruby glassware. It doesnt try too hard woth the grip like others of this proce point. Its lightweight. And writes smoothly and evenly with Noodler's bullet proof ink loaded into. The converter. It fits in when using it at a corporate settings, but at a price point that isnt going to break my back-office-not-management-paygrade's bank account if the pen falls out of the pen loop, or my pocket, and gets lost.

A real winner!

I put my Platinum Prefounte <03F> up against my Waterman Graduate and Hemisphere, a Pilot Metropolitan, Sailor Lecoule, and yes, a Lamy 2000. I inked them with Iroshizuku ink, wrote a paragraph each and capped them and stood them nib up in a jar. Seven days later, I tried writing with them and the Platinum Prefounte was the only one that immediately started writing. Although the nib is pretty solid, this is my daily pocket pen. A well-made pen with an excellent price.

FAQs about Fountain Pens

How do I fill a fountain pen with ink? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It depends on the pen's filling mechanism, which you can find in the Technical Specs section above.

Here's a quick definition of the most common filling mechanisms:

  • Cartridge - A small, disposable, sealed plastic reservoir that holds fountain pen ink. These come pre-filled with ink, and typically you just push to insert them into place and you'll be ready to write! Check out our quick guide here.
  • Converter - A detachable and refillable ink reservoir that allows you to use bottled ink in a cartridge-accepting pen. Typically you will install the converter into the grip section, dip the nib/feed into the ink, and twist or pull the converter knob to draw ink into the converter. Here's a video for how to fill a cartridge/converter pen using a LAMY pen as an example.
  • Eyedropper - A pen that utilizes the entire barrel as a reservoir for ink. Ink is directly filled into the barrel, allowing for a high ink capacity. Here's a video on how to do it!
  • Piston - A type of filling system that uses a retracting plunger inside a sealed tube to draw ink into a pen. They are typically either twist or push-operated. These pens cannot accept cartridges or a converter, and only fill from bottled ink.
  • Vacuum - A push-style piston that uses pressure to fill the large pen body with ink. They seal the ink chamber when closed, making it ideal for flying without risk of leaking. Check out our video on how to use a vac filler here.

Check out more info on these filling mechanisms including a video on how to fill each one on our blog.

How do I clean a fountain pen? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It depends on the filling mechanism, but it mostly comes down to flushing it out with water, and sometimes a little bit of Pen Flush if the ink is really stuck.

It's a bit easier to show than to tell, so we've put together a few quick videos showing you the process:

How often do I need to clean my fountain pen? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

We recommend a good cleaning every 2 weeks, and any time you change ink colors.

Water will usually do the trick, but we recommend you use our Goulet Pen Flush if the ink has been left in the pen for a while and could have dried up, or when you’re switching ink colors.

My pen won’t write! What do I do? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

First things first... make sure you have ink in the pen! Be sure that the ink cartridge or converter is seated properly in the pen, and that you aren't out of ink.

We always recommend you give your pen a good cleaning first, using our Goulet Pen Flush, or a drop of dish soap in some water. New pens often have some machining oil residue left in the feed, so a good cleaning often does the trick first.

If that still doesn't work, try priming the feed. This consists of either dipping your pen nib and feed in ink, or forcing ink from the converter down into the feed.

If it’s still not working after that, please reach out to us so we can help!

What's your return policy? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B
