Pilot Metal Falcon Fountain Pen - Burgundy
The Pilot Metal Falcon is a metal version of the very popular Falcon series. Slightly larger and heavier than the resin Falcon, this burgundy red fountain pen pen has a soft rhodium-plated 14k gold nib that will give you line variation as you change your writing pressure. The slightly longer body has enough room to accommodate the included Pilot Con-70 converter, giving you greater ink capacity for longer writing sessions. You can also use proprietary Pilot ink cartridges or any other Pilot converter. There has been a slight change to the Con-70 converter design, so the one you receive may vary from what is pictured here.
The softness of the nib is such that if you want to use it for daily writing you can, without having to flex it out. Though if you do want to showcase line variation, all you need to do is increase your writing pressure on the downstrokes and it's there for when you need it. The finish of the Metal Falcon is a gloss lacquer, with a sparkly metallic color that catches the light in a subtle, yet very impressive way. The pen is trimmed with polished rhodium accents.
This is a slightly heavier pen than most at 33g, a noticeable difference from the lighter resin version of the Falcon. It's well-balanced though, even posted. The screw-cap pushes on the back of the pen to post, and holds very firmly. While the Metal Falcon is certainly an investment, if you appreciate Pilot's build quality and are looking for a reliable soft nib in a professional-looking pen, then you should give this pen a serious look.

This is my first gold-tipped pen, and I am absolutely in love. The feedback from the extra fine nib is fantastic, providing such a satisfying writing experience. While the push-button Con-70 converter can be a bit tricky—it needs to be vertical to fill properly—it’s a minor issue compared to everything else this pen offers. If you're low on ink, a syringe can easily solve the filling challenge.
Overall, if I wasn’t sticking to a budget, I’d be tempted to buy every color with different nib sizes! For those who enjoy a bit of weight, I highly recommend the metal version, though it’s still slightly lighter than I’d prefer. I’m already looking forward to my next pen, the Visconti Homo Sapiens. Buy this pen—you won’t be disappointed!
I’m delighted with my Pilot Metal Falcon, which I have in Burgundy with soft fine nib and filled with Diamine Red Dragon ink. I had thought the Metal Falcon might be heavy, but that’s not been my experience, even though my hands are small.
This is a pen for beautiful writing. Even though the nib isn’t vintage flex, I can obtain an amount of line variation that satisfies me. The “trick” that I use is to apply absolutely no pressure to the upstrokes, and then just a moderate amount to the downstrokes. Even using no pressure produces a very thin line, and the moderate pressure produces a wider line.
I don’t usually spend this much money on a pen, so this purchase is a real celebration. I debated for quite some time before purchasing, and I am so happy with my choice.
Just like the Pilot Metal Falcon Fountain Pen - Sapphire, SEF but smoother; maybe (maybe) not as smooth as the SFM nib of a Pilot Custom 743 � but, they're different nibs and I really like the ergonomics and feel of the Metal Falcon[the only reason I didn't give a Very High value rating is it's crazy to me that I'm spending $250 on a pen (a PEN!). Is it worth it - if you like, enjoy fountain pens, want a little more heft (4-5 grams heavier than an 823), good balance, esp posted, then you'll appreciate this pen]
