A special limited edition in honor of Monteverde's 25th anniversary!

The Monteverde Innova™ Formula M is an extraordinary writing instrument collection that combines unique materials and cutting edge designs that will entice not only pen aficionados, but anyone who dreams of life in the fast lane. Inspired by the racing industry, the Monteverde Innova Formula M collection evokes the power, speed and elegance of competition.

This fountain pen features a 304 wire-braided stainless steel sleeve with a rainbow, reflective PVD coating over a brass barrel. Wire braiding is often fitted on high-performance cars as it offers the best possible protection against mechanical damage. The braided mesh is made by winding wire around a core on spools that are rapidly rotated in a circular pattern, weaving the wire together and molding it into a flexible and robust braid. 304 wire-braided mesh’s advantage lays in its incredible durability and resistance against UV rays, abrasion, and chemical corrosion, making it virtually indestructible.

Each writing instrument is fully-covered with PVD coating, providing key performance features while giving additional vibrancy, luster, and durability. PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) is a process that uses diverse thin film deposition techniques that focus on vaporizing a solid material in a vacuum environment, resulting in deposition onto the surface as a pure material coating. This material coating is appealing to the eye but also extremely durable, can reduce friction and serve as a barrier against any potential damage caused by the external environment and usage of the product. Moreover, PVD coating is highly resistant to tarnishing and corrosion, which makes it perfectly suitable for decorative finishes with colors that do not fade.

The Monteverde Innova fountain pen is offered with your choice of a reliable, smooth-writing German made JoWo #6 black steel nib in extra-fine, fine, medium, broad, 1.1mm stub, or the black JoWo #6 Omniflex flexible steel nib for variation in line width.

Our note about the JoWo Omniflex nib: This flex nib will allow you to experience more bounce and softness than writing with conventional nibs. You can achieve some line variation with a little additional downward pressure, to a point. We recommend flexing the nib to about twice the line width that you would see without using any pressure. Please take care to avoid pressing too hard on the nib, as over-flexing could prevent the tines from returning fully to their original position and decrease or stop your ink flow.

It fills via standard international converter or ink cartridge, both of which are included. Each pen is housed in a luxury gift box with a custom-designed sleeve and comes with a bottle of black ink.

Note: We do our best to photograph the pens to show how they will appear in person, but due to the nature of the material, there will be some variation in the pattern seen here. This adds an element of uniqueness to the pen, with no two patterns being exactly the same. We cannot honor special requests.

In 1999 Monteverde USA® was founded in Canoga Park, California USA with the intention to create writing instruments that feature unparalleled quality, function, and affordable luxury.

Well... There's that...

I really wanted to love this thing but my TWSBI 580 and mini stub, hongdian medium, woodsworth (well all of the nibs lol), are better than this in effectively every area except form and that's debatable... Wouldn't feed ink right so thankfully Goulet sent me another nib and even let me try a different one because the 1.1 was significantly more broad than the TWSBI, that didn't fix it, thought it was ink, paper, pen, then finally figured out the cartridge had a crack in it. Nibs have been the least smoothest things I've ever wrote with and the clip basically just bends when you look at it lol. I SO desperately want to love this and i will keep it but it's now relagated to the desk.

Watch for the Cap!

I got the limited edition green carbon fiber version of this pen and I like the nib. It's a nail and it's a little dry, but it's fairly smooth and better than a lot of the other Bock or JoWo nibs that are common on overpriced pens from mid-tier or specialty manufacturers. I think Monteverde's QC on the nibs is actually pretty good in this regard, as I have never encountered a scratchy or unworkable nib from them.

The body itself is metal and heavy. People with larger hands can use this no problem and the fore grip is smooth enough to not dig in with threads or other metal protrusions. The converter is a screw-on type, which is nice for avoiding slip-fit issues and leaking ink.

The only real caveat to this pen is also its strength: the heaviness and precision of the body and cap mean that snapping the cap onto the back end (posting), as satisfying as it sounds and feels, makes tiny ink droplets spray from the tip. I've verified this and now point the nib at scrap paper when posting the cap. You can also just not post, but the length of the posted pen and the weighting is just right for me.

Great pen, tines and nib were not ideal

Beautiful pen, nib was all scraped up and tines were splayed a bit that caused the pen to throw down a ton of ink, bummed about it but what can you do.

Gifts for me and my nephews

I bought the Monteverde Lightning Fountain Pen after seeing it on the podcast and knew that I had to have one for myself. I showed it to my nephew weeks later who was instantly smitten with it. (The click was satisfying I was told.) I bought one each for him and his brother. I know they will love their pens to pieces as I do with my own.

First monetverde pen

Loved the look and couldn't resist. A little heavy but well balanced even unposted. The nib is buttery smooth, so different from my favorite Twisby and a great addition to my collection. Now I just need to find even more reasons to write.

FAQs about Fountain Pens

How do I fill a fountain pen with ink? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It depends on the pen's filling mechanism, which you can find in the Technical Specs section above.

Here's a quick definition of the most common filling mechanisms:

  • Cartridge - A small, disposable, sealed plastic reservoir that holds fountain pen ink. These come pre-filled with ink, and typically you just push to insert them into place and you'll be ready to write! Check out our quick guide here.
  • Converter - A detachable and refillable ink reservoir that allows you to use bottled ink in a cartridge-accepting pen. Typically you will install the converter into the grip section, dip the nib/feed into the ink, and twist or pull the converter knob to draw ink into the converter. Here's a video for how to fill a cartridge/converter pen using a LAMY pen as an example.
  • Eyedropper - A pen that utilizes the entire barrel as a reservoir for ink. Ink is directly filled into the barrel, allowing for a high ink capacity. Here's a video on how to do it!
  • Piston - A type of filling system that uses a retracting plunger inside a sealed tube to draw ink into a pen. They are typically either twist or push-operated. These pens cannot accept cartridges or a converter, and only fill from bottled ink.
  • Vacuum - A push-style piston that uses pressure to fill the large pen body with ink. They seal the ink chamber when closed, making it ideal for flying without risk of leaking. Check out our video on how to use a vac filler here.

Check out more info on these filling mechanisms including a video on how to fill each one on our blog.

How do I clean a fountain pen? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It depends on the filling mechanism, but it mostly comes down to flushing it out with water, and sometimes a little bit of Pen Flush if the ink is really stuck.

It's a bit easier to show than to tell, so we've put together a few quick videos showing you the process:

How often do I need to clean my fountain pen? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

We recommend a good cleaning every 2 weeks, and any time you change ink colors.

Water will usually do the trick, but we recommend you use our Goulet Pen Flush if the ink has been left in the pen for a while and could have dried up, or when you’re switching ink colors.

My pen won’t write! What do I do? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

First things first... make sure you have ink in the pen! Be sure that the ink cartridge or converter is seated properly in the pen, and that you aren't out of ink.

We always recommend you give your pen a good cleaning first, using our Goulet Pen Flush, or a drop of dish soap in some water. New pens often have some machining oil residue left in the feed, so a good cleaning often does the trick first.

If that still doesn't work, try priming the feed. This consists of either dipping your pen nib and feed in ink, or forcing ink from the converter down into the feed.

If it’s still not working after that, please reach out to us so we can help!

What's your return policy? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

You can submit a return request within 30 days of your order date. You can read all our Return Policies here.

To initiate a return, please submit a request at the Return Portal. Our Customer Care team might reach out to you for more information.

Please note we are unable to accept a return of any Namiki or Sailor Bespoke fountain pen for any reason once it has been used with ink. Please thoroughly inspect and dry test the pen before use.
