The Kaweco Sport is a pocket-sized fountain pen that when posted transforms into a full-sized pen that easily fits in your hand. This solid matte black anodized aluminum fountain pen comes with a gold-plated steel nib and a gold-plated clip. As a piston filler, it uses bottled ink only.

The Starter Set comes with the pen and a 32ml bottle of blue bottled ink, set in a round tin. Replacement nib units are available separately (note- these nib units are a different size than the normal Kaweco Sport).

Since 1883, there have been various systems for filling a fountain pen. Today, ink cartridges are a widespread and popular filling method. In the past, fountain pens were mainly filled using ink bottles. Besides lever fountain pens and eyedroppers, the piston mechanism has been the most important and reliable filling system. In 1937, the Kaweco Sport fountain pen was first presented as a piston filler under the name #612 and has been further developed in many different versions over the years.

A piston inside the writing instrument allows ink to be drawn directly from the glass into the integrated reservoir. This makes ink cartridges obsolete. The transparent window allows you to keep an eye on the ink level at all times.

Fantastic pen

This is undeniably one of my new favorite pens. The build quality is great, it looks and feels amazing, and it may in fact be the smoothest nib I have. I'm so glad I picked this up

Excellent writer

The Kaweco Piston Fill pen might become one of my favorite writing instruments. I love the size, the shape, but most of all the way it writes. I got the Fine nib and it is quite wet and gives a smooth experience. Already am tempted to use it as my everyday carry pen.

Best Kaweco Sport Evv-ahh

Oh, it's just another same old Kaweco Sport in a new finish, right? WRONG! This is truly the pinnacle of Kaweco Sport Engineering! If you like the size and styling of the Kaweco Sport lineup, you won't be too surprised. About 4mm shorter (when capped) than a standard Sport, it has the same '060' nib, in gold colored stainless steel in five sizes from to , which are the same as standard Sport models. The screw in nib unit is not interchangeable with the standard Sport's nib unit, since it's a little shorter and has a rubber o-ring near the nib end to prevent leaks. The filling mechanism can be described as a 'captured converter', meaning it works like a regular cartridge converter, but cannot be removed by the user. The piston rod has a double lamelle piston head to ensure a good seal and a long service life. The **** is at the opposite end of the pen from the nib, and is covered and protected by a blind cap. To fill the pen's reservoir, you have to remove the blind cap first, fill/top off the ink reservoir (up to 1.2 ml), and screw the blind cap back on. This will prevent unintended ink discharges from accidentally turning the filler ****. The cap posts securely. When removing the posted cap, there's a chance of loosening the blind cap if you twist the cap counter clockwise. So, if you must twist the cap to overcome friction, always twist it clockwise. The grip section is the same size as a standard Sport pen's, and the capping threads are equally unobtrusive. I opted for the nib, reluctantly, because my experience with nibs, especially Kaweco nibs, has not been the best. But choices were limited, and this was the least undesirable option for me. And I was wrong! The nib on my pen is by far the smoothest nib, straight out of the box, of any nibbed pen I've ever bought! Very smooth, especially for an nib, no hard starts, no skippingnothing but hours of just writing without any thoughts about the function of the pen. To me, that's how a pen should be: unnoticed while writing; it excels at shrinking into the background, and while writing, you're not going to be distracted by its need for attention. In some ways, it's like a VW Typ 1 (the original Beetle): it goes, and goes, and goesAnd thanks to almost twice the ink reservoir capacity compared to a international short cartridge AND an very visible ink window, 'range anxiety' is no longer an issue when leaving your residence with this pen as your only writing utensil. And now we wait, impatiently, for the Piston Filler tech to spread to the rest of the Kaweco Sport family. Brass Sport Piston Filler

FAQs about Fountain Pens

How do I fill a fountain pen with ink? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It depends on the pen's filling mechanism, which you can find in the Technical Specs section above.

Here's a quick definition of the most common filling mechanisms:

  • Cartridge - A small, disposable, sealed plastic reservoir that holds fountain pen ink. These come pre-filled with ink, and typically you just push to insert them into place and you'll be ready to write! Check out our quick guide here.
  • Converter - A detachable and refillable ink reservoir that allows you to use bottled ink in a cartridge-accepting pen. Typically you will install the converter into the grip section, dip the nib/feed into the ink, and twist or pull the converter knob to draw ink into the converter. Here's a video for how to fill a cartridge/converter pen using a LAMY pen as an example.
  • Eyedropper - A pen that utilizes the entire barrel as a reservoir for ink. Ink is directly filled into the barrel, allowing for a high ink capacity. Here's a video on how to do it!
  • Piston - A type of filling system that uses a retracting plunger inside a sealed tube to draw ink into a pen. They are typically either twist or push-operated. These pens cannot accept cartridges or a converter, and only fill from bottled ink.
  • Vacuum - A push-style piston that uses pressure to fill the large pen body with ink. They seal the ink chamber when closed, making it ideal for flying without risk of leaking. Check out our video on how to use a vac filler here.

How do I clean a fountain pen? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It depends on the filling mechanism, but it mostly comes down to flushing it out with water, and sometimes a little bit of Pen Flush if the ink is really stuck.

It's a bit easier to show than to tell, so we've put together a few quick videos showing you the process:

How often do I need to clean my fountain pen? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

We recommend a good cleaning every 2 weeks, and any time you change ink colors.

Water will usually do the trick, but we recommend you use our Goulet Pen Flush if the ink has been left in the pen for a while and could have dried up, or when you’re switching ink colors.

My pen won’t write! What do I do? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

First things first... make sure you have ink in the pen! Be sure that the ink cartridge or converter is seated properly in the pen, and that you aren't out of ink.

We always recommend you give your pen a good cleaning first, using our Goulet Pen Flush, or a drop of dish soap in some water. New pens often have some machining oil residue left in the feed, so a good cleaning often does the trick first.

If that still doesn't work, try priming the feed. This consists of either dipping your pen nib and feed in ink, or forcing ink from the converter down into the feed.

If it’s still not working after that, please reach out to us so we can help!
