This comfortably balanced Esterbrook Estie in Nouveau Bleu, part of the regular lineup, is offered in a fountain pen with gold-plated trim. The material is blended and turned acrylic with a Mucha blue mix of colors and a highly-polished finish. A sleek clip provides a clean accent for the cap and slides easily into a shirt pocket. A cushion cap closure provides a secondary seal to ensure a wet point. Finally, the fountain pen is equipped with a #6 JoWo gold-plated steel nib. The Estie fills via standard international cartridge or converter (included).

In addition to the normal nib sizes, this pen is also available with select specialty nib grinds including the Journaler, Needle Point, Scribe, and Techo:

  • The Journaler Nib, by Gena Salorino, is a medium nib ground to a stub with wide downstrokes and thinner cross-strokes.
  • The Scribe Nib, by Josh Lax, is a modified architect nib with thin downstrokes and thick cross-strokes.
  • The Needle Point Nib, by Kirk Speer, is a superfine point that's perfect for smaller writing and Japanese characters.
  • The Techo Nib, by CY of Tokyo Station Pens, features line variation depending on the pen's angle. Thicker lines appear at a lower angle, and thinner lines at a higher angle.

Note: JoWo is transitioning their nib designs from the old scroll pattern to a more simple design. Stock is currently mixed; what you receive may not necessarily match what is photographed.

At the turn of the 19th century, the artist Alphonse Mucha was at the height of his career. A fine artist, whose name is now synonymous with the art nouveau style, the Czech Mucha came from an illustration background and became widely and commercially well-known through his advertisements for everything from chocolate to cigarettes to laundry detergent.

Living in Paris, Mucha was also celebrated for his idealized female figures that were often based on Parisian film stars and glitterati, and his work included his years studying, drawing, and painting film actress and icon, Sarah Bernhardt. His portraits of her were printed as large-scale posters heralding his commercial work which took advantage of new advances in printing.

In 1887, the invention of celluloid film paved the way for Mucha to become the first artist to work directly from photography. Thusly, his color palette was often the rich, warm, pastel tones of photographs and he used these hues to create Mucha women with flowing hair that matched the flourish of his gorgeous lettering and typefaces.

Within this range of color emerges a signature eau de nil blue that Mucha used to clothe the women in lush drapery, illuminate the skies behind them, give them wings and surround them with waves of water.

Our newest addition to our core range of Esterbook Estie’s celebrates the innovation of Mucha’s work and his particular shades of blue, blended into a material that reflects the celluloid of pen making past.

Introducing Nouveau Bleu, the latest offering that joins our other classic colors as a permanent part of the Estie lineup.

Perfect Nib

Fabulous Esterbrook Estie pen in shimmering Nouveau Blue/Gold colors! I am thrilled to have a custom "Journaler Nib" by Gena Salorino. Writing with this instrument is an absolute pleasure!

Great pen, even better service

This is one of those, "mistakes happen - it's how you handle them that shows who you are", moments. I was super excited to get the Estie with the Journaler nib in this cool blue color, and even ordered a bottle of Pilot Iroshuzuku Kon-Peki to match with it. The package arrived beautifully boxed, with a nice note, some candy and a sticker - as is usual for Goulet!
When I finally got the pen inked up and started writing, it just didn't feel right - but I didn't panic. I did all of the normal stuff. I flushed the pen, and looked at the nib - oh, dear. Yep - the tines were uneven, and the nib just wasn't right. It was beyond "feedback", and was straight up scratchy.
I took some pictures, and contacted Goulet Pens. I got a quick, sympathetic response outlining exactly how to send it back and get a replacement. I really couldn't have asked for a nicer way to handle it. I felt like I got treated exactly the way they'd have wanted to be treated if this had happened to them.

I got a replacement pen back that had a beautifully written note showing how it writes for them (dip tested and examined for imperfections). The replacement is a beautiful pen, and it's just super fun to write with. The Journaler nib adds character to my handwriting that makes writing more enjoyable - and is't that what fountain pens are all about?

Great pen, great service, fantastic recovery for something that was not their fault at all.

Beyond Expectations

I'm an old guy who has used fountain pens since th early 50s when ball pens were still fairly primitive and not heavily used. Back then steel nibs were much poorer than modern versions and would easily rust or be adversly dealt with by inks. This pen is actually the first steel nibbed pen I've owned and this Journaler nib is beautufully smooth with just enough `stubiness' to look interesting on paper; cudos to Gena Salarino! I love the acrylic this pen uses too, beautiful!

Great Pen, Love the Color and the Feel

I love this Esterbrook Estie in Nouveau Bleu. The color is great and the smooth finish and feel is wonderful. I got the fine nib. Unfortunately, the tines were slightly misaligned when I got it but I followed Drew's tutorial on adjusting misaligned tines and now it writes beautifully. I've currently got it inked with Robert Oster Thunderstorm. I good combo with this pen in my opinion.

Already, in my Top 5 pens

I recently acquired this pen, and it has already secured a top spot among my extensive collection of sixty-five pens. The polished finish of this pen makes it not only visually stunning but also a pleasure to write with. While I love this pen, I would have given it a five-star rating if it were a bit more affordable.

FAQs about Fountain Pens

How do I fill a fountain pen with ink? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It depends on the pen's filling mechanism, which you can find in the Technical Specs section above.

Here's a quick definition of the most common filling mechanisms:

  • Cartridge - A small, disposable, sealed plastic reservoir that holds fountain pen ink. These come pre-filled with ink, and typically you just push to insert them into place and you'll be ready to write! Check out our quick guide here.
  • Converter - A detachable and refillable ink reservoir that allows you to use bottled ink in a cartridge-accepting pen. Typically you will install the converter into the grip section, dip the nib/feed into the ink, and twist or pull the converter knob to draw ink into the converter. Here's a video for how to fill a cartridge/converter pen using a LAMY pen as an example.
  • Eyedropper - A pen that utilizes the entire barrel as a reservoir for ink. Ink is directly filled into the barrel, allowing for a high ink capacity. Here's a video on how to do it!
  • Piston - A type of filling system that uses a retracting plunger inside a sealed tube to draw ink into a pen. They are typically either twist or push-operated. These pens cannot accept cartridges or a converter, and only fill from bottled ink.
  • Vacuum - A push-style piston that uses pressure to fill the large pen body with ink. They seal the ink chamber when closed, making it ideal for flying without risk of leaking. Check out our video on how to use a vac filler here.

Check out more info on these filling mechanisms including a video on how to fill each one on our blog.

How do I clean a fountain pen? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It depends on the filling mechanism, but it mostly comes down to flushing it out with water, and sometimes a little bit of Pen Flush if the ink is really stuck.

It's a bit easier to show than to tell, so we've put together a few quick videos showing you the process:

How often do I need to clean my fountain pen? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

We recommend a good cleaning every 2 weeks, and any time you change ink colors.

Water will usually do the trick, but we recommend you use our Goulet Pen Flush if the ink has been left in the pen for a while and could have dried up, or when you’re switching ink colors.

My pen won’t write! What do I do? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

First things first... make sure you have ink in the pen! Be sure that the ink cartridge or converter is seated properly in the pen, and that you aren't out of ink.

We always recommend you give your pen a good cleaning first, using our Goulet Pen Flush, or a drop of dish soap in some water. New pens often have some machining oil residue left in the feed, so a good cleaning often does the trick first.

If that still doesn't work, try priming the feed. This consists of either dipping your pen nib and feed in ink, or forcing ink from the converter down into the feed.

If it’s still not working after that, please reach out to us so we can help!

What's your return policy? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B
