Color is muddy

I keep looking for a pretty, muted purple that leans toward pink. I'll call it lilac. I had high hopes for Tyrian Purple, but as I've used it over the months, it's been dull, brownish, and muddy. I would prefer a color that is slightly more intense, but certainly not as intense as all the screaming hot pinks and dark, cold purples I see out there. The only purple I've truly loved was J. Herbin Larmes de Cassis, but it's so dry in my fine-point pens that I simply can't use it, even in a wet Jinhao pen. So I'm at a loss. Other than the color, I am quite satisfied with the properties of the ink. I like Diamine inks very much overall, just not this color.

beautiful ink, not as much shading as I expected but still gorgeous

This ink is indeed a beautiful color, a deep purple with some reddish tones. At first I was a little disappointed because I inked up a pen with a stub nib and fully expected, based on the swatch to have some shading. In fact, the color is quite saturated and darker than I thought. Still, once I accepted that, it is a lovely deep purple with some reddish tones to it, and I'm enjoying it.

Not a Purple I Love.

I was expecting a darker purple tending more toward red than blue. It seemed lighter and more mauve than what I would have liked. I am currently using 4 other Diamine inks in my pens and find them to be excellent in saturation and drying times. As an experiment I used 'Grape' on the glossy plastic envelopes used for bank deposits and was surprised that it not only worked, but was as clear as ballpoint ink - and without the pressure that writing on those bags usually requires.Other than the colour I had no issues with the quality, shading or wetness of the ink.

Really cool Deep Purple

I was originally interested in this ink because as a history nerd I like the historical nature of this shade. I also like it because it is just a nice deep purple. Too many purples have a pink quality to them. I got the ink and really like it. It is a nice deep purple with out any other colors mixed in. Great color!!

FAQ about Ink Samples

How do I fill my fountain pen from an ink sample vial? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It depends on the fountain pen's filling mechanism.

Check out our blog post on How to Fill a Fountain Pen from an Ink Sample Vial.

How much writing can I do with 2ml of ink? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It really depends on how big or small you write, and the nib size you’re using. We find that usually you can get 2 good fills for a typical converter with our Ink samples, or one good fill with a piston-filling pen. How much writing depends on you more than anything else, so we recommend experimenting with different nib sizes to find what works best for you.

What is shading, sheening, or shimmering ink? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

Shading - A common (and often desired) result of a fountain pen ink pooling in certain parts of a letter when writing, so that the color and saturation of the ink appears different within a single letter or word. This characteristic cannot be achieved with ballpoint or rollerball pens and is a very appealing aspect of fountain pen use for those particularly drawn to all the pretty ink colors.

Sheen - Characteristic of a fountain pen ink where when ink pools another color can be seen on top of the ink, especially when looked at in different light angles using certain paper types. There is no way to guarantee an ink will sheen, but using a larger nib on a pen will help obtain sheening results in your writing.

Shimmering - Fountain pen ink that has small particles of glitter mixed in.

Is shimmering ink safe to use in fountain pens? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

Yes! Shimmering ink is a great way to add some flare to your writing. We have found that a larger nib will showcase more shimmering particles while writing, but you can use any nib size and shimmering ink. All the ink we sell is safe for use in fountain pens.

You can learn more in our blog: How to Write with Shimmering Ink.
