Underwhelmed & pleasantly surprised.

Pen: Esterbrook Estie Raven, medium nib.
Paper: Apica CD15 notebook.
Expectations: I expected something similar to a glitter gel pen.
Facts: You need a wider nib than what I used to see the shimmer effect better. Mine was almost unnoticeable to the naked eye. I had to place my writing in direct sunlight and tilt the page like you would a holographic card to see the shimmer. The color is easy to read. It is bright but not translucent. Very much like an opaque highlighter. Smooth writing. Bits of clumped glitter would occur during my first writing of the day. I assume it is because my pen sat overnight which caused the shimmer to clump in the feed and/or nib area. I would roll my pen to mix the shimmer but the tiny clumps of shimmer just couldn't mix well in those areas. Eventually, the tiny clumps would work their way out in a few short sentences and all would be well again. When viewing the ink in the sunlight I noticed the shimmer is evenly dispersed in the written ink. I was pleasantly surprised by this. Cleaning wasn't as bad as I expected. The color washed out easily but I still have shimmer flakes showing up in my new ink choice.
Recommendation: I would use this with a Stub, Broad, or Double Broad nib. I would dedicate one or two nibs and one or two converters to just shimmer inks. This will help void contaminating other nonshimmer inks.
Personal Opinion: *This was a free sample given to me and it is the only reason why I tried it. My opinion does not reflect an intentional purchase* I did not like this color of ink. It reminds me of highlighter green, which is my least favorite highlighter color. I was disappointed that my expectations did not come to fruition as the shimmer was simply unnoticeable in generic light conditions and nib size. The ink flowed and wrote smoothly and without skipping. This was another unexpected but pleasant surprise.
Conclusion: I would buy Diamine Shimmer ink again but in a different color. I will be buying wider nibs and a new converter to use just for shimmer inks.

Love the Shimmer and the Variation

This went on lighter than it dried; and I couldn't see the shimmer as much when it was wet, but when I put it on Tomoe River paper, when it dried, the gold was very very brilliant. I have a modified Conklin with a Zebra G flex nib and specialized feed that I love dearly as it goes on beautifully, with super thin lines but big spread on the thicks, and the gold showed up on all the lines. The beauty was that where the ink is thicker it shows a darker green and it's spring green where it's thin. Beautifully bright. It does take a little while to dry, but that's a small price to pay for the beauty of the results.

Beautiful Ink!

I wasn't sure about this ink - it seemed like it might be too light or too bright to read easily. But it's a beautiful grass green, with a nice yellow-golden sheen that coordinates with the base colour in such a pretty way. It's a nice green on any paper, but flowing fast out of my Pilot Parallel on Tomoe River, it was cheerful and lovely, like a fresh Spring day, with plenty of shading and sheen!

Very shimmery

I love the shimmer in this and I loved the color it showed in the website but I felt that when I wrote with it it was much more of a yellow green then green

Frequently Asked Questions

Is shimmering ink safe to use in fountain pens? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

Yes! Shimmering ink (a fountain pen ink that has small particles of glitter mixed in) is a great way to add some flare to your writing. We have found that a larger nib will showcase more shimmering particles while writing, but you can use any nib size with shimmering ink. While it is safe to use in fountain pens, it may require a little extra maintenance.

Due to the amount of particulate in this ink used to achieve the sparking look, you may experience restricted ink flow in some of your pens, especially with finer nibs.

We recommend shaking the ink thoroughly before filling, and gently rolling the pen in your hands often to keep the shimmer effect consistent. This will also help prevent clogging.

You will also want to be diligent about regularly cleaning and maintaining your pen when using this ink.

How do I fill my fountain pen from an ink sample vial? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

The technique depends on the fountain pen's filling mechanism.

How much writing can I really do with 2ml? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

We find that usually you can get 2 good fills for a typical converter with our ink samples, or one good fill with a large capacity piston-filling pen.

How much writing you can do depends on you more than anything else. It mostly depends on how big or small you write, and the nib size you’re using. We recommend experimenting with different nib sizes to find what works best for you.
