Basically black

I was expecting a dark blue, but this is essentially black. If you catch the right angle in bright light you maybe get a hint that there is a blue undertone, but even staring hard at it I cannot usually find it. Tends to show through the back of the paper I'm using (Campus notebook; not as fine as Rhodia, but much nicer than copy paper).

Love This Dark Ink

I was looking for a very dark Blue Black. It writes beautifully in my 3776, Rhodia and Clairfontaine papers. My standby has been Noodler's Midnight Blue, still love it, but I'm going to order a bottle of this one!

Darker

The 1864 is a tad more black than the regular Diamine Blue-Black. Then it has all the outstanding qualities of the Diamine Blue-Black and most Diamine inks.Decent color on all the paper samples I tried and no bleeding, save on particularly poor papers. Importantly, it works great on regular check stock, but does not have any water resistance. I tested the ink in a Conklin All-American with a replacement Goulet Fine steel nib and a Lamy Safari with a Fine steel nib. I generally order a double sample of any ink for testing.

Perfect Color

This ink may be my favorite to date. I have it in a Lamy Safari with a 1.1mm stub nib and can't put it down. It flows beautifully and the color is spot on for an old fashioned blue black. It has some slight shading from the dark blue to black on normal paper. The ink does smear easily when wiped with a wet finger. The color, saturation, and shading are exactly what I was hoping for out of this ink. I highly recommend it.

A dark, indigo blue/black ink that shades nicely.

I chose Diamine's Blue Black ink to try after reviewing the Goulet swabs for blue black inks. I ordered a sample and tried it for the first time today, loaded in a Pilot 78G with a BB nib. This is a dry writing nib that is really a 1.0mm italic/stub. The ink appears almost totally black as it comes out of the nib. As it dries, which it does quickly, it reveals a dark blue tone similar to indigo. I cannot discern any green or red overtones. This is a pretty highly saturated ink. It does shade nicely when used with a broad nib. It does not have any sheen that I can see.

FAQ about Ink Samples

How do I fill my fountain pen from an ink sample vial? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It depends on the fountain pen's filling mechanism.

Check out our blog post on How to Fill a Fountain Pen from an Ink Sample Vial.

How much writing can I do with 2ml of ink? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It really depends on how big or small you write, and the nib size you’re using. We find that usually you can get 2 good fills for a typical converter with our Ink samples, or one good fill with a piston-filling pen. How much writing depends on you more than anything else, so we recommend experimenting with different nib sizes to find what works best for you.

What is shading, sheening, or shimmering ink? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

Shading - A common (and often desired) result of a fountain pen ink pooling in certain parts of a letter when writing, so that the color and saturation of the ink appears different within a single letter or word. This characteristic cannot be achieved with ballpoint or rollerball pens and is a very appealing aspect of fountain pen use for those particularly drawn to all the pretty ink colors.

Sheen - Characteristic of a fountain pen ink where when ink pools another color can be seen on top of the ink, especially when looked at in different light angles using certain paper types. There is no way to guarantee an ink will sheen, but using a larger nib on a pen will help obtain sheening results in your writing.

Shimmering - Fountain pen ink that has small particles of glitter mixed in.

Is shimmering ink safe to use in fountain pens? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

Yes! Shimmering ink is a great way to add some flare to your writing. We have found that a larger nib will showcase more shimmering particles while writing, but you can use any nib size and shimmering ink. All the ink we sell is safe for use in fountain pens.

You can learn more in our blog: How to Write with Shimmering Ink.
