Excellent and waterproof dark green ink

Excellent dark green ink--perfect for mid-April as the grass greens up and plants awaken from winter. Flow is excellent from a variety of pens, from my Pelikan M1000 to my TWSBI Vac 700R, and no feathering even on regular copy paper. Even after soaking the paper in water, the ink held fast, retained its color, and shows no signs of wear or fading, so I'd say it's waterproof.

My Go-to Green Ink

This is the ink I settled on as my go-to green ink, without much other experimentation. For reference, I used a TWSBI Eco with a broad nib. It writes very, *very* wet, but not messily so. It writes a nice, dark green that is still noticeable as green. It didn't feather, spread, skip, or railroad. I've had very few hard starts with it, and when I did, it always only took a second or two. It doesn't bleed through on fountain pen-friendly paper, and not on all less fountain pen-friendly paper. For comparison, the De Atramentis Document Green was much lighter (more of an emerald color) and *much* wetter -- to the point where it felt like the pen was sliding around on the page. I'm very impressed with De Atramentis inks in general, and this ink in particular. When I get a bottle of this, it will be my third De Atramentis ink that I'm keeping a bottle of so far -- the next company that comes close is Platinum, with two colors so far. I'm picky. With few exceptions, I don't swap ink colors in my pens. I prioritize water-proof and well-behaved inks. De Atramentis inks, and this one in particular fit the bill.

De A' Document Greens

The term 'document' is meaningful, as both document green and dark green show significant bleedthrough on cheap papers, including low cost Japanese journals. However, the first two are great for one-side-only writing on cheaper papers. The green-grey is more versatile, having much less bleed through than green and dark green. On better quality journals the green and dark green are very satisfying to me. My favourite combo is the doc. green on Midori MD Notebook paper, and the 5* rating is on that basis. Stats given on a 50+ humidity day with heavy rain.

Trying new inks!

I got 6 vials of De Atramentis inks to try with my sketching. First, I love that I can try any ink first! Just love the little vials. So far I have tried Urban Grey and Fuchsia and like both these colors and their permanence.

Great for personalizing a permanent ink color

I bought the Document Dark Green ink to mix in with the Document Cyan Blue. I wanted to make the blue shade a little more turquoise to coordinate with the journal I am writing in. Worked like a charm. My recipe was 3 sample vials of green to one bottle of cyanperfect. The Document inks are permanent which is what I needed.

FAQ about Ink Samples

How do I fill my fountain pen from an ink sample vial? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It depends on the fountain pen's filling mechanism.

Check out our blog post on How to Fill a Fountain Pen from an Ink Sample Vial.

How much writing can I do with 2ml of ink? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It really depends on how big or small you write, and the nib size you’re using. We find that usually you can get 2 good fills for a typical converter with our Ink samples, or one good fill with a piston-filling pen. How much writing depends on you more than anything else, so we recommend experimenting with different nib sizes to find what works best for you.

What is shading, sheening, or shimmering ink? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

Shading - A common (and often desired) result of a fountain pen ink pooling in certain parts of a letter when writing, so that the color and saturation of the ink appears different within a single letter or word. This characteristic cannot be achieved with ballpoint or rollerball pens and is a very appealing aspect of fountain pen use for those particularly drawn to all the pretty ink colors.

Sheen - Characteristic of a fountain pen ink where when ink pools another color can be seen on top of the ink, especially when looked at in different light angles using certain paper types. There is no way to guarantee an ink will sheen, but using a larger nib on a pen will help obtain sheening results in your writing.

Shimmering - Fountain pen ink that has small particles of glitter mixed in.

Is shimmering ink safe to use in fountain pens? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

Yes! Shimmering ink is a great way to add some flare to your writing. We have found that a larger nib will showcase more shimmering particles while writing, but you can use any nib size and shimmering ink. All the ink we sell is safe for use in fountain pens.

You can learn more in our blog: How to Write with Shimmering Ink.
