Since its launch in 2007, the Platinum Preppy fountain pen series has grown in popularity among a wide range of age groups around the world. The all new Platinum Prefounte is a model designed more for adults that boasts a sense of high quality while retaining the basic functions of Preppy fountain pen. Subdued colors are employed for the transparent body made of resin. The graphics are also kept simple, while the metal clip adds an accent to produce a chic, translucent appearance ideal for adults. The stainless steel nib features a welded tip made of an abrasion-resistant special alloy, which provides an excellent writing feel.

The Prefounte fountain pen is equipped with Platinum's “Slip & Seal Mechanism” that prevents ink from drying out in the pen with the cap on for one year. It accepts proprietary Platinum ink cartridges (one blue-black cartridge is included) or a Platinum converter (sold separately) to fill with bottled ink.

For those who seek a smart and casual fountain pen, the Prefounte is ideal for both business and daily use, as well as for fountain pen beginners.

By converting this pen to an eyedropper, you can fill the entire barrel with ink for maximum ink capacity! All you need to do is add an o-ring and a small amount of silicone grease to the threads (available separately).

Platinum Prefounte Fountain Pen - gift from DCPen Show 2024

Receiving this pen as a gift was unexpected and delightful. I chose the red, medium point. The instruction about fountain pens was extremely well done and very helpful. Questions were many and the answers given were appropriate, accurate, and understandable. So, when I went home and tried the new pen I was already very happy with it. But now, 2 weeks later, this pen is in my hand daily. The writing experience is amazing. I have learned for the first time when folks mean when they say "smooth writing" ... it's as though this nib doesn't touch the paper but the ink flows out of it from above the paper. I wish I could thank the makers in person. This (M) nib is a dream! My question now is "Should I be ecstatic and enjoy this or, or, well, or shall I buy one with (F) nib and hope for the same experience....ya, I'll think about this for a few days more.

What a nib!

(I'm being careful.....what does this mean in the paragraph below?---- [you agree to Judge.me’s terms, privacy and content policies.] Thank you.)

Platinum Prefounte'

Sophisticated Preppy with a metal clip. Writes better than many more expensive pens. I upgraded my 0.5mm Prefounte with a converter; but,it's definitely not necessary. The Platinum cartridges seem durable and easily refillable. The converter is about same price as pen,IIRC. I like the Graphite Bleu pen because it is much less translucent than the other colors. With a 7-pack of every color Preppy plus a few Prefountes you would never need to buy another fountain pen. 'Want' is another subject. GPC is the BEST!

Good pen for a bargain price

I have several Platinum pens. This is my third Prefounte. The other two were medium nibs which wrote a little wet for my preference. This is a fine point and it's just right. My preference is a snap on cap vs screw on and this brand is the only one I know of with a snap on cap that doesn't dry out.

Excellent pen

I like the Preppy, and use them at work. This, however, is a Great Leap Forward. It is smooth [medium nib] and flows on all of the paper on which I have used it. I made mine into an eyedropper, as I do with all of the Platinums.

FAQs about Fountain Pens

How do I fill a fountain pen with ink? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It depends on the pen's filling mechanism, which you can find in the Technical Specs section above.

Here's a quick definition of the most common filling mechanisms:

  • Cartridge - A small, disposable, sealed plastic reservoir that holds fountain pen ink. These come pre-filled with ink, and typically you just push to insert them into place and you'll be ready to write! Check out our quick guide here.
  • Converter - A detachable and refillable ink reservoir that allows you to use bottled ink in a cartridge-accepting pen. Typically you will install the converter into the grip section, dip the nib/feed into the ink, and twist or pull the converter knob to draw ink into the converter. Here's a video for how to fill a cartridge/converter pen using a LAMY pen as an example.
  • Eyedropper - A pen that utilizes the entire barrel as a reservoir for ink. Ink is directly filled into the barrel, allowing for a high ink capacity. Here's a video on how to do it!
  • Piston - A type of filling system that uses a retracting plunger inside a sealed tube to draw ink into a pen. They are typically either twist or push-operated. These pens cannot accept cartridges or a converter, and only fill from bottled ink.
  • Vacuum - A push-style piston that uses pressure to fill the large pen body with ink. They seal the ink chamber when closed, making it ideal for flying without risk of leaking. Check out our video on how to use a vac filler here.

Check out more info on these filling mechanisms including a video on how to fill each one on our blog.

How do I clean a fountain pen? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It depends on the filling mechanism, but it mostly comes down to flushing it out with water, and sometimes a little bit of Pen Flush if the ink is really stuck.

It's a bit easier to show than to tell, so we've put together a few quick videos showing you the process:

How often do I need to clean my fountain pen? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

We recommend a good cleaning every 2 weeks, and any time you change ink colors.

Water will usually do the trick, but we recommend you use our Goulet Pen Flush if the ink has been left in the pen for a while and could have dried up, or when you’re switching ink colors.

My pen won’t write! What do I do? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

First things first... make sure you have ink in the pen! Be sure that the ink cartridge or converter is seated properly in the pen, and that you aren't out of ink.

We always recommend you give your pen a good cleaning first, using our Goulet Pen Flush, or a drop of dish soap in some water. New pens often have some machining oil residue left in the feed, so a good cleaning often does the trick first.

If that still doesn't work, try priming the feed. This consists of either dipping your pen nib and feed in ink, or forcing ink from the converter down into the feed.

If it’s still not working after that, please reach out to us so we can help!

What's your return policy? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B
