This Sailor Pro Gear Realo fountain pen features a solid maroon resin barrel and cap, complemented by gold-plated accents. The Realo is a unique model within the Sailor pen offerings as it fills via internal piston mechanism, instead of with an ink cartridge or converter. A small ink window towards the bottom of the barrel shows you your ink level.

The flat top cap features the Sailor anchor logo inset into the top finial. The cap screws to open/close and can push to post onto the back of the barrel when writing.

It comes equipped with Sailor's legendary 21k gold nib in a wide variety of nib sizes.

Note: Sailor has fully transitioned to the new design of nib that features the anchor logo only. Some of our images may feature the old design with the anchor and “1911”.

Love the Realo

I am very much impressed with the Sailor Realo. A beautiful pen and it writes superbly. Also like the piston filler feature and the ink window very classy.

Sailor Realo

I love this pen. Not only is it gorgeous, but it writes really well. I chose a zoom nib; with the zoom nib, the line width is a little too large for journal writing, but it's perfect for drafting and letter writing. The ink window is handy, and the ink capacity is respectable. While the pen is expensive, I feel the Sailor Pro Gear Realo delivers.

solid, elegant piston-filler from established brand

As advertised, the Realo is small-ish and light, but nevertheless feels and writes solid. Not flashy, but beautifully elegant. Still working on first fill, but piston mechanism operated well. Gave the music nib a try: it's not the three-prined flex nib as on a Noodlers, but more of a specialized stub nib, with something of a sweet spot. But the line variation is...again, elegant. There is a little scratchiness to the nib, but not too much, and the ink flow has been steady & sufficient for the wide line it makes. Currently using Pilot/Namiki Blue which writes & looks nice, but maybe is just a bit too vibrabt for this serious-looking pen. I think a dark teal like Noodler's Army Air Corps Blue-Black will match well, but maybe I'll just end up with a deep black like Noodler's HOD.

Sailor pen matches its press

There is no two ways of saying this, a beautiful pen. Beautiful to write with and beautiful looking. Sailor writing reputation is met with my experience. I like the Realo for its extra length for my hand and the ink window is always nice.

A decent pen

I've been meaning to get a Sailor pen for awhile. Overall this a beautiful pen, as most sailor pens this pen does have a decent bit of feedback with an extra fine nib so I mainly use it on fountain pen friendly paper. My only complaint is the body of the pen doesn't really have a lot of weight on it

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I fill a fountain pen with ink? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It depends on the pen's filling mechanism, which you can find in the Technical Specs section above.

Here's a quick definition of the most common filling mechanisms:

  • Cartridge - A small, disposable, sealed plastic reservoir that holds fountain pen ink. These come pre-filled with ink, and typically you just push to insert them into place and you'll be ready to write! Check out our quick guide here.
  • Converter - A detachable and refillable ink reservoir that allows you to use bottled ink in a cartridge-accepting pen. Typically you will install the converter into the grip section, dip the nib/feed into the ink, and twist or pull the converter knob to draw ink into the converter. Here's a video for how to fill a cartridge/converter pen using a LAMY pen as an example.
  • Eyedropper - A pen that utilizes the entire barrel as a reservoir for ink. Ink is directly filled into the barrel, allowing for a high ink capacity. Here's a video on how to do it!
  • Piston - A type of filling system that uses a retracting plunger inside a sealed tube to draw ink into a pen. They are typically either twist or push-operated. These pens cannot accept cartridges or a converter, and only fill from bottled ink.
  • Vacuum - A push-style piston that uses pressure to fill the large pen body with ink. They seal the ink chamber when closed, making it ideal for flying without risk of leaking. Check out our video on how to use a vac filler here.

Check out more info on these filling mechanisms including a video on how to fill each one on our blog.

How do I clean this fountain pen? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It mostly comes down to flushing out the pen with water, and sometimes a little bit of pen flush if the ink is really stuck.

We put together a blog post with step-by-step instructions, or you can watch the video here:

We recommend a good cleaning every 2 weeks, and any time you change ink colors. Water will usually do the trick, but we recommend you use our Goulet Pen Flush if the ink has been left in the pen for a while and could have dried up, or when you’re switching ink colors.

For even more information about fountain pen cleaning, check out our Fountain Pen 101 video blog post.
