About the Sailor Manyo collection:

Flowers have always been a popular poetic subject dating back to ancient Japanese history. This is the theme for Sailor's Manyo bottled ink series. Based on popular flowers frequently mentioned in Japanese “Manyoshu” – an anthology of compiled ancient poems – Sailor has chosen eight dye-based ink colors to best represent this vibrant palette range.

"Manyosyu" - Collection of Ten Thousand Leaves - is the oldest (c.759) and most revered anthology of Japan's poetic compilations. Over a period of four centuries, 4,516 poems were written by every class of person ranging from Emperors to merchants and farmers. "Manyo" is an abbreviation of "Manyosyu" and its meaning indicates people of all ranks.

"Manyosyu" is often regarded in Japan as a true expression of the Japanese spirit. The themes of the poems relate to love, elegies, nature, the seasons, and so on. Flowers are especially relevant in Japanese culture and about 1,500 of the poems in "Manyosyu" cover some 160 species of plants and 50 different flowers.

An upscale navy

There's a lot to like about this ink. It's more interesting than your standard navy because it's warmer (not teal but throw more green in and you'd be there) and because it has a red component too. But that is why I opted to give this only 4 stars - the red aspect does limit this a little bit in how versatile it is. It looks good on most paper but is not quite as universally useable as my favorite inks. With that caveat in mind, this particular Manyo ink matches my limited experience with whole ink line - it flows generously. If you are curious to see if you agree with me, how about picking up one of these samples? C'mon, you know you want to!

A Lovely Lovely Blue

Manyo Kikyou is a gorgeous navy blue-- my personal favorite so far! It has a muted stony-blue tone when applied lightly, and a rich shimmery-coppery sheen when applied heavily. The ink is wet, but not overly so-- overall pleasant to write with.

Beautiful shading, lush ink

I ordered a sample of this along with two other blue/black-type inks to try when I bought my Conklin Endura limited edition abalone/chrome pen. This was the hands-down winner and is a beautiful match to a beautiful pen. I'll be buying a bottle with my next order! Great shading even with a fine nib. Pic is on my Hobonichi Cousin Avec (white Tomoe River paper) - the shading is definitely there but a bit hard to photograph.

love this ink

My pens like this ink. I never have a problem with it and I enjoy the sheening of the ink on tomeo river paper and Stalogy paper also.

A solid blue

This color is a nice, straight blue with maybe a touch of turquoise. There is the slightest sheen, but not as strong as other blues. It's a solid color if you need an everyday blue, but it lacks the panache of some of the more pastel colors in the line. :) Still, a nice lovely blue for everyday!

Frequently Asked Questions

The technique depends on the fountain pen's filling mechanism.

How much writing can I really do with 2ml? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

We find that usually you can get 2 good fills for a typical converter with our ink samples, or one good fill with a large capacity piston-filling pen.

How much writing you can do depends on you more than anything else. It mostly depends on how big or small you write, and the nib size you’re using. We recommend experimenting with different nib sizes to find what works best for you.
