Kakuno is a delightful fountain pen that is ideal for both first time fountain pen users and experienced writers. "Kakuno" means "to write" in Japanese, and that's just what this pen helps users to do by featuring an appealing smiley face on the steel nib, when oriented upward, ensures perfect nib orientation. This clear resin fountain pen has a hexagonal shape, similar to the classic wooden pencil, so that the pen is comfortable to hold and doesn't roll away. Indentations in the cap also make it easy to grasp when uncapping the pen. A black Pilot ink cartridge is included to get you started writing right away. It also accepts a Pilot CON-40 or CON-70 converter (sold separately). Novices will soon be on their way to becoming seasoned fountain pen users, and seasoned users will enjoy the fun, exuberant writing the Kakuno fountain pen delivers. Everyone can enjoy writing with a Kakuno fountain pen.

Ink hoarder

Maybe mine is faulty - the ink wells up in the bottom of the feed and yet has a hard time making its way down the actual nib. It feels like a waste of ink, skips and acts as if itā€™s out of ink with a fresh fill, or it leaks. Dries out, does not write smoothly no matter the ink Iā€™ve used thus far. I was looking for a solid ultra fine nib pen and this was suggested to me by an employee. Would have returned but I thought maybe its user error/bad ink. Replaced the included ink cartridge with a converter and still no luck with other inks. I want to love it but it just kills me to write with.

Great pen and great customer service!

I love the Pilot Precise V5 rollerball pen and was hoping the Pilot Kakuno would be a better version of the V5, and boy was I right! Itā€™s easier on my hand, lightweight, and easy to use! I love being able to use whatever ink I want while still getting the great Pilot writing experience Iā€™m used to from the V5.

I decided to buy my Kakuno from Goulet Pens because I heard they have exceptional customer service, and boy did I hear correctly! I was one of the unfortunate handful of people who got a not-so-great nib that made it past Pilotā€™s quality control. Not only did Brian K. from the customer service team send me a new pen, but he taught me how to fix the defective pen. The customer service team truly went above and beyond to help me with my little $15 Kakuno.

I HIGHLY recommend both the Pilot Kakuno and Goulet Pens to any and everyone!

Good Pen

Itā€™s not fancy, but the quality is great, it writes fine, and it works well with a CON-40 converter. You should have at least one of these in your collection, especially for the price.

Not a starter pen, it's just a great pen.

Phenomenal Value with tons of upgrade potential! Use some of the fantastic Iroshizuku cartridges or any of the compatible Pilot converters. This extra fine is scalpel-fine.... I was expecting to love it but I found the Fine in the Kakuno to be more enjoyable with plenty of precision. The Kakuno can also take some Wingsung nibs which write very smoothly and can be had for cheap, just in case you want to experiment or really bang this pen around!

Great Writer Great Value

I have yet to buy a Pilot pen that I didn't like. I might even like this a little more than the Explorer. If you're deciding between the two, get them both! Thank you Goulet.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I fill this pen from an ink cartridge? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

A cartridge is small, disposable, sealed plastic reservoir that holds fountain pen ink. These come pre-filled with ink, and typically you just push to insert them into place and you'll be ready to write!

This pen uses proprietary Pilot ink cartridges, which are available in a wide range of colors.

You can learn more about how to actually install an ink cartridge on our blog, or in this video tutorial:

How do I use a converter? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

A converter goes in the place of where the ink cartridge would normally go. From there, you can fill your fountain pen from bottled ink.

A converter is a detachable and refillable ink reservoir that allows you to use bottled ink in a cartridge-accepting pen. Typically you will install the converter into the grip section, dip the nib/feed into the ink, and twist or pull the converter knob to draw ink into the converter.

We have a great video showing how to use a converter here:

How do I clean this fountain pen? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It mostly comes down to flushing out the pen with water, and sometimes a little bit of pen flush if the ink is really stuck.Ā

We put together a blog post with step-by-step instructions, or you can watch the video here:

We recommend a good cleaning every 2 weeks, and any time you change ink colors.Ā Water will usually do the trick, but we recommend you use ourĀ Goulet Pen FlushĀ if the ink has been left in the pen for a while and could have dried up, or when youā€™re switching ink colors.

For even more information about fountain pen cleaning, check out our Fountain Pen 101 video blog post.
