The Namiki Aya fountain pen collection is the newest maki-e model from Namiki, with designs lacquered by the highly revered Kokkokai group. The barrel artwork was designed using traditional maki-e urushi lacquer work and finished with a sprinkling of gold and silver dust using the togidashi polishing technique. Each pen features different colored urushi lacquer to create the rich hues of nature.

Akatsuki (Daybreak): the moment when light first appears in the morning. This Japanese word is also used for a eureka moment or realization achievement. The body of the Akatsuki is a deep, burnished red. Dried red lacquered powders are applied with different intensities, and gold powders and goldround powders are used in the background before the body is coated in urushi lacquer and burnished and polished to a shine.

The Namiki Aya Collection has a classical vest-type body style and is enhanced with an oversized No. 30 two-tone 18k gold nib featuring the iconic silhouette of Mount Fuji, available in Fine Medium, Medium, or Broad nib sizes. The Aya fountain pen collection offers effortless, smooth writing and is designed to delight the fountain pen collector.

This classical fountain pen is refillable for continued use with a Pilot ink cartridge or Pilot’s CON-70 converter, both of which are included, and arrives packaged in a beautiful Namiki wooden giftbox.

Disappointing

I purchased this pen last year. It is the most expensive pen in my collection, yet it is the most disappointing. It is surprising since I have many pilot pens in my collection, and have been very happy with all of them except for this one. I have sent it back to Japan twice for service/nib adjustments, with each stint taking 4 months. The results of the service showed marginal improvement, at best. Not what I was expecting from a Namiki product.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I fill this pen from an ink cartridge? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

A cartridge is small, disposable, sealed plastic reservoir that holds fountain pen ink. These come pre-filled with ink, and typically you just push to insert them into place and you'll be ready to write!

This pen uses proprietary Pilot ink cartridges, which are available in a wide range of colors.

You can learn more about how to actually install an ink cartridge on our blog, or in this video tutorial:

How do I use a converter? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

A converter goes in the place of where the ink cartridge would normally go. From there, you can fill your fountain pen from bottled ink.

A converter is a detachable and refillable ink reservoir that allows you to use bottled ink in a cartridge-accepting pen. Typically you will install the converter into the grip section, dip the nib/feed into the ink, and twist or pull the converter knob to draw ink into the converter.

We have a great video showing how to use a converter here:

How do I clean this fountain pen? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It mostly comes down to flushing out the pen with water, and sometimes a little bit of pen flush if the ink is really stuck.

We put together a blog post with step-by-step instructions, or you can watch the video here:

We recommend a good cleaning every 2 weeks, and any time you change ink colors. Water will usually do the trick, but we recommend you use our Goulet Pen Flush if the ink has been left in the pen for a while and could have dried up, or when you’re switching ink colors.
