2ml sample of Jacques Herbin Noir Inspiration black scented fountain pen ink, in a labeled plastic vial.

Deep and dark in color, Noir Inspiration invites us to reflection. Noir Inspiration takes us on a nocturnal olfactory stroll evoking woody scents smoked with round tobacco, and a subtle union of moss and vetiver.

Established in Paris in 1670, the Maison HERBIN initially specialized in the sealing wax, fine stationery and ink trade, and imported shellac from India. Since this founding their aim has been to "Give body and color to our thoughts." The adventure of one of the oldest ink makers in the world began over three hundred years ago but its products have expanded into a complete universe of inks, writing instruments, stationery, and other goods for amateurs and connoisseurs of the lettering arts.

Strong Scent

The scent is strong enough to be noticed days after it was used on the page! Somewhat cologne like, and a fun one to use. The color lightens up a bit when it dries.

LOVE the scent!

I filled my pen with this ink and then didn't use it for a while. When I started writing with it, I was sitting beside my husband and started asking him what smells so good. I'd forgotten this was a scented ink, but I could definitely smell it even without knowing. It's not a gimmick! It does smell woodsy almost like Christmas firs. Kinda makes me wish it were a dark green color instead. I was using a 1.1 nib, and it got scratchy. Not sure that's due to the ink or if it's because of not using the pen for a while and having it start to dry up or because of the paper I used to write on. But it still makes me want to try more scented inks by this brand. I think the only other scented ink I've tried was Apple Blossom. I don't remember being this impressed with the smell, but that was a few years ago. This one is worth sampling to see if you like it! But might be too finicky to want a whole bottle.

The smell is not good

Bought with high expectations, but I'm glad I only got the sample size. It stinks to the point I won't actually ink up a pen with it.

Good Scent, If You Like The Dark and Deep

I bought the ink originally to darken up another scented Herbin ink with a great scent but a terrible color. The two inks have merged seamlessly so far into a more write-able color. Alone, it's a good black. It seems to bleed through a little more than normal, but works very well on 100 gsm paper with a smooth nib. I enjoy writing with scented inks, and this one is that deep, dark, soft woodsy scent I really like.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I fill my fountain pen from an ink sample vial? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

The technique depends on the fountain pen's filling mechanism.

Check out our blog post on How to Fill a Fountain Pen from an Ink Sample Vial, or watch the video here:

How much writing can I really do with 2ml? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

We find that usually you can get 2 good fills for a typical converter with our ink samples, or one good fill with a large capacity piston-filling pen.

How much writing you can do depends on you more than anything else. It mostly depends on how big or small you write, and the nib size you’re using. We recommend experimenting with different nib sizes to find what works best for you.
