2ml sample of Diamine Vintage Copper fountain pen ink, in a labeled plastic vial.

Initially launched as part of the 2021 Diamine InkVent calendar and now a part of the regular Diamine Red Edition collection, this orange-brown fountain pen ink features added gold shimmer. Works best with broader nibs on high quality paper to really see the shine.

Due to the amount of particulate in this ink used to achieve the sparking look, you may experience restricted ink flow in some of your pens. We recommend shaking the ink thoroughly before filling and gently rolling the pen in your hands often to keep the shimmer effect consistent. This will also help prevent clogging. You will also want to be diligent about cleaning and maintaining your pen when using this ink.

Worth the effort

I liked the sample enough to get a bottle of it. I had to make sure I was getting the shimmer particles mixed in and I had to fool around getting the right nib for it but once I had that sorted I loved it!

The color I've been waiting for

So the first thing I should mention is that this ink clogged my broad nib Visconti pretty much instantly, lol. If high maintenance is a no fly zone for you, this isn't your ink. But the shading is just insane! This is the effect I was hoping for when I bought Herbin's Cornaline d'Egypte, a gorgeous crimson nearly overtaking the coppery burnt-orange with the broad nib. It's the whole sunset in an individual letter.

Whoops, it's shiny!

I bought this not realizing it was a shimmer ink. I figured it out when I noticed a thick deposit of golden dust in the vial. No problem, i just loaded it into a pen with a stub nib. This ink is beautiful! It's neither brown nor orange, copper really describes the color best. It flows smooth and wet, and dries fairly quickly. I also love the shading. I just wish the shimmer was better suspended, because even with rolling the pen, the glitter fell onto the page heavily in the first line and there was less and less as I wrote. I will be trying Diamine's Ancient Copper next, in the hope that it's the same ink base but without the shimmer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is shimmering ink safe to use in fountain pens? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

Yes! Shimmering ink (a fountain pen ink that has small particles of glitter mixed in) is a great way to add some flare to your writing. We have found that a larger nib will showcase more shimmering particles while writing, but you can use any nib size with shimmering ink. While it is safe to use in fountain pens, it may require a little extra maintenance.

Due to the amount of particulate in this ink used to achieve the sparking look, you may experience restricted ink flow in some of your pens, especially with finer nibs.

We recommend shaking the ink thoroughly before filling, and gently rolling the pen in your hands often to keep the shimmer effect consistent. This will also help prevent clogging.

You will also want to be diligent about regularly cleaning and maintaining your pen when using this ink.

How do I fill my fountain pen from an ink sample vial? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

The technique depends on the fountain pen's filling mechanism.

How much writing can I really do with 2ml? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

We find that usually you can get 2 good fills for a typical converter with our ink samples, or one good fill with a large capacity piston-filling pen.

How much writing you can do depends on you more than anything else. It mostly depends on how big or small you write, and the nib size you’re using. We recommend experimenting with different nib sizes to find what works best for you.
