Very light but a beautiful gray

Very light gray. Works well to do shading when you sketch. Interesting effect with watercolor sketching because it is waterproof.

Very very light

I bought several De Atramentis samples to gauge their suitability for sketching. I'm looking at darker inks for line work and light washes to go over my lines. In addition to the ink samples, I also ordered a vial of the official 'De Atramentis Dilution Liquid'. Turns out the dilution liquid is not needed for this Light Grey ink it's so, so very faint by default. Even swabbed directly from the vial onto my swatch cards it's difficult to see. I'm very close to being critical of it because it's so light that I am not sure it's suitable for under-sketches on my drawings. It's very hard to see on mixed media paper when dispensed via a Kaweco Sport with a Broad nib. Then again, it is called 'Light Grey' I can't say they're wrong! However I have a feeling I'll just use the dilution liquid on one of the darker grey inks I bought as I can control the mixture and get exactly what I'm looking for. For the record, so far I'm enjoying a 1:1 mix of De Atramentis Urban Grey and the Dilution liquid for washes. I have this loaded in a water brush pen and use it for washes over the line work of De Atramentis Document Grey.

I love the subtle grey colour for sketching - not stark like black.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I fill my fountain pen from an ink sample vial? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

The technique depends on the fountain pen's filling mechanism.

Check out our blog post on How to Fill a Fountain Pen from an Ink Sample Vial, or watch the video here:

How much writing can I really do with 2ml? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

We find that usually you can get 2 good fills for a typical converter with our ink samples, or one good fill with a large capacity piston-filling pen.

How much writing you can do depends on you more than anything else. It mostly depends on how big or small you write, and the nib size you’re using. We recommend experimenting with different nib sizes to find what works best for you.
