This pearlescent brown resin pocket-sized fountain pen is the Esterbrook JR, short for "J Reborn". It comes with gold-plated trim and an orange finial. A modern take on a vintage classic. It fills via standard international cartridge/converter (included) and has a JoWo #5 stainless steel nib.

From Esterbrook:

At the end of September, a controversial thing happens. The pumpkin latte arrives at nearly every coffee shop and cafe. Whether you love it or hate it, it IS a phenomenon of the 21st century. Most likely, the pumpkin latte is here to stay and from now until the end of October it will be the drink of choice for millions of people around the world.

In New Jersey, the home of Esterbrook, pumpkins have always been a big part of the fall season. Pumpkin patches all over the state are visited by families for hayrides, corn mazes, petting zoos and for choosing pumpkins to decorate for Halloween and trick or treating. While some of those pumpkin farms may now serve pumpkin lattes, they have been serving up family traditions for decades.

The “J” was Esterbrook’s sleek and suave, classic pocket pen that appealed to the practicality of the times. It was a perfect pen for both men and women, and we think it still is today. In celebration of these time-honored places, we’ve brewed up a little something of our own. Introducing the JR Pumpkin Latte. It’s our way to mix a little bit of our home state’s heritage with our morning cup of Joe.

The new “JR” is stylish and refined without being too fancy. It’s meant to match your style, as well as it graces your hand. With a refined design, that isn’t fussy, it is compact in size, so you can always have one on hand in your jeans or shirt pocket, purse, or briefcase. It can be with you on the go, wherever you go.

We do our best to photograph the pens to show how they will appear in person, but due to the nature of the material, there will be some variation in the pattern seen here. This adds an element of uniqueness to the pen, with no two patterns being exactly the same. We cannot honor special requests.

A Horrible Pen

I bought this pen because I liked the appearance. The nib that it came with out of the box was misaligned. I bought an Esterbrook nib replacement unit with a medium nib and it was scratchy and dry. Believe it or not, I tried a third Esterbrook replacement unit this time in broad. It wrote smoothly, but skipped often. This is simply one of the worst writers that I've ever used. I would never try another Esterbrook pen. Just an atrocious product, especially at this price point.

Beautiful Pen

JR Pumpkin Latte, 1.1 StubPros - Beautiful design. A delight to look at. Slim. Easy to strip down and clean. Good ink capacity. Lightweight. Affordable.Cons - The cap becomes very loose when posted and falls off. Not wet enough for a stub. By looks alone, this pen is a solid 5. If the pen was more wet than it is, it would elevate my writing experience to another level. *Almost* a perfect pen to me.

Loved this pen. Color and weight are nice. It's a little small for my hands but paired very nice with Noodlers Whaleman's sepia

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I use this pen with ink cartridges? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

A cartridge is small, disposable, sealed plastic reservoir that holds fountain pen ink. These come pre-filled with ink, and typically you just push to insert them into place and you'll be ready to write!

This pen uses standard international ink cartridges, a common size which is available in many colors from various brands.

You can learn more about how to actually install an ink cartridge on our blog, or in this video tutorial:

How do I use a converter? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

A converter goes in the place of where the ink cartridge would normally go. From there, you can fill your fountain pen from bottled ink.

A converter is a detachable and refillable ink reservoir that allows you to use bottled ink in a cartridge-accepting pen. Typically you will install the converter into the grip section, dip the nib/feed into the ink, and twist or pull the converter knob to draw ink into the converter.

We have a great video showing how to use a converter here:

How do I clean this fountain pen? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It mostly comes down to flushing out the pen with water, and sometimes a little bit of pen flush if the ink is really stuck.

We put together a blog post with step-by-step instructions, or you can watch the video here:

We recommend a good cleaning every 2 weeks, and any time you change ink colors. Water will usually do the trick, but we recommend you use our Goulet Pen Flush if the ink has been left in the pen for a while and could have dried up, or when you’re switching ink colors.

For even more information about fountain pen cleaning, check out our Fountain Pen 101 video blog post.
