2ml sample of Jacques Herbin 1670 Bleu Ocean shimmering fountain pen ink, in a labeled plastic vial. Reformulated in 2015, it is a medium blue ink with a gold shimmer/sheen.

Due to the amount of particulate in this ink used to achieve the sparking look, you may experience restricted ink flow in some of your pens. We recommend shaking the ink thoroughly before filling and gently rolling the pen in your hands often to keep the shimmer effect consistent. This will also help prevent clogging. You will also want to be diligent about cleaning and maintaining your pen when using this ink.

A very easy-writing ink with some flash

This ink sample was the first I ever purchased and I was so impressed with how it performed. I was unaware however that there was gold sparkles in this ink (I clearly didn't read the disclaimer on the page) and was pleasantly surprised that when I was almost finished with the vial the extreme amount of gold that appeared. Upon initially inking-up my pen, I did not shake the vial so at the start there was very little gold. Once I figured out however that there was significant gold, I was very impressed. The ink went on with a dark blue/purple hue and when dry appeared to be just gold. A VERY unique ink indeed. Now it is one of my favorite inks! The only drawback is that the gold gets caught up in the feed and some railroading can occur. Also cleaning the pen is more than slightly difficult (again due to the tiny gold particles) so I recommend using a pen flush. In all, a great ink with a nice two-toned quality. Because of some of the maintenance issues involved with a sheening ink, I give J. Herbin 1670 Bleu Ocean 4 out of 5 stars.

Great ink!

I bought a sample of this and love it. I think I'm going to make it my daily ink!

Neat novelty

I wanted to love this ink so bad, but I just couldn't force myself. The specks were cool and it made for some interesting looking writing, but it was so dark it ghosted to the next page. I don't see much of a practical use for this ink myself, but I'm glad I got to see what it looked like.

Good with Italic nib, unimpressive in M

First I put it in a Sheaffer M. Nothing special. I even thought for a moment that Goulet had sent me an old-stock sample without the gold sparkles. No, Goulet doesn't make mistakes like that; the gold just didn't show for whatever reason in that pen. Tried the remaining ink in a Pilot Plumix. Now we're onto something. I get regular sparkles though-out the stroke, with more settling on the bottom of the stroke than the top because more ink has accumulated. I don't see any shading at all with this ink even with the Italic nib. You get sparkles instead of shading...From discount-store no-name journals to Clairefontaine and Apica, it worked well throughout. There was occasional bleed through more due to the Plumix being recently inked than to the ink itself. If they hadn't added the sparkles, I don't think there would be anything special about this ink. With the sparkles, it has something you don't get from the other inks.

Sparkly Blue!

For a FP newbie, I love how the ink is pigmented and had that extra pizzazz because of the gold. The ink is smooth, writes/flows nicely, doesn't feather, and dries up pretty fast.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is shimmering ink safe to use in fountain pens? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

Yes! Shimmering ink (a fountain pen ink that has small particles of glitter mixed in) is a great way to add some flare to your writing. We have found that a larger nib will showcase more shimmering particles while writing, but you can use any nib size with shimmering ink. While it is safe to use in fountain pens, it may require a little extra maintenance.

Due to the amount of particulate in this ink used to achieve the sparking look, you may experience restricted ink flow in some of your pens, especially with finer nibs.

We recommend shaking the ink thoroughly before filling, and gently rolling the pen in your hands often to keep the shimmer effect consistent. This will also help prevent clogging.

You will also want to be diligent about regularly cleaning and maintaining your pen when using this ink.

What does it mean if an ink has shading or sheen? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

Shading is a common (and often desired) result of a fountain pen ink pooling in certain parts of a letter when writing, so that the color and saturation of the ink appears different within a single letter or word. This characteristic cannot be achieved with ballpoint or rollerball pens and is a very appealing aspect of fountain pen use for those particularly drawn to all the pretty ink colors.

Sheen is a characteristic of a fountain pen ink where, when ink pools, another color can be seen on top of the ink. It is more pronounced when looked at in different light angles using certain paper types. There is no way to guarantee an ink will sheen, but using a larger nib on a pen may help obtain better sheening results in your writing.

How do I fill my fountain pen from an ink sample vial? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

The technique depends on the fountain pen's filling mechanism.

How much writing can I really do with 2ml? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

We find that usually you can get 2 good fills for a typical converter with our ink samples, or one good fill with a large capacity piston-filling pen.

How much writing you can do depends on you more than anything else. It mostly depends on how big or small you write, and the nib size you’re using. We recommend experimenting with different nib sizes to find what works best for you.
