The Pilot Custom 74 is a simple yet sophisticated fountain pen. The minimalistic design with a transparent teal cap and barrel makes it a must-have for any pen enthusiast.

This fountain pen features a #5 rhodium-plated 14k gold nib and comes with a Pilot CON-70 converter, which holds an ample ink supply while uniquely combining the characteristics of a vacuum-filling and push-button converter.

You can also use proprietary Pilot/Namiki ink cartridges (one is included) if you prefer.

Each Custom 74 pen is packaged in an elegant Pilot gift box.

There has been a slight change to the Con-70 converter design, so the one you receive may vary from what is pictured here.

Love Pilot!!!

This is my 4th gold nib Pilot (I have two Decimos and an E95s) and I love all of them. Finally bought the Custom 74 because Brian and Drew talk about it so much. SO glad I did!! It writes beautifully - comfortable in the hand and smooth as it can be!

Smoothness

This is hands down the smoothest fountain pen I have ever used. I pair it with Herbin Emerald of Chivor - the teal ink shines in this teal pen.

keep coming back

My first gold nib was a 74 med. I returned it to Pilot cause nib slid around. They replaced the nib with one which is easy to control. When I wanted another writer for access to two colors, I bought another 74 med. Then I wanted a Fine writer. Ordered a 74. Nope. Too stiff, I thought. I went to Sailor (14/21k) to Falcon to Decimo and back thru. I don't remember if something was amiss with that 74 fine (a bit rough? not well dipped?) or was it my inexperience with fine nibs. By this time I did have enough experience with my hands and pens and paper and ink to make better decisions. So I was down to either a 74 fine or a sailor pro gear slim mf. I got both. If I had to have one fine writer it would be the 74. It's comfortable for cursive and printing writing. It's functionally perfect ... once you get the converter unstuck (maybe that was my fault; remove it before dipping).

Top Notch!

Love the size of this pen, and it writes incredibly smooth. I have the medium nib which I've found to be the best choice for lefties.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I fill this pen from an ink cartridge? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

A cartridge is small, disposable, sealed plastic reservoir that holds fountain pen ink. These come pre-filled with ink, and typically you just push to insert them into place and you'll be ready to write!

This pen uses proprietary Pilot ink cartridges, which are available in a wide range of colors.

You can learn more about how to actually install an ink cartridge on our blog, or in this video tutorial:

How do I use a converter? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

A converter goes in the place of where the ink cartridge would normally go. From there, you can fill your fountain pen from bottled ink.

A converter is a detachable and refillable ink reservoir that allows you to use bottled ink in a cartridge-accepting pen. Typically you will install the converter into the grip section, dip the nib/feed into the ink, and twist or pull the converter knob to draw ink into the converter.

We have a great video showing how to use a converter here:

How do I clean this fountain pen? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It mostly comes down to flushing out the pen with water, and sometimes a little bit of pen flush if the ink is really stuck.

We put together a blog post with step-by-step instructions, or you can watch the video here:

We recommend a good cleaning every 2 weeks, and any time you change ink colors. Water will usually do the trick, but we recommend you use our Goulet Pen Flush if the ink has been left in the pen for a while and could have dried up, or when you’re switching ink colors.

For even more information about fountain pen cleaning, check out our Fountain Pen 101 video blog post.
