The Platinum Preppy fountain pen is one of the best values for the money! This is a fantastic starter fountain pen, or great for lending to a friend. This pen features a translucent red plastic body, a clear cap, red trim, and a stainless steel nib. As a Japanese-made pen, the nib runs on the narrow side. The Preppy accepts proprietary Platinum ink cartridges (one red cartridge is included) or a Platinum converter (sold separately) to fill with bottled ink.

By converting this pen to an eyedropper, you can fill the entire barrel with ink for maximum ink capacity! All you need to do is add an o-ring and a small amount of silicone grease to the threads (available separately).

Preppy Fountain Pen Red

Highly satisfied with this pen. At this price you can’t beat it with stick. I have the fine point- very smooth writer. This pen is better than several more expensive pens I own.

Great pen but finer than expected

I have owned multiple Preppy pens, but this one seems to write very fine with the Diamina Red Poppy ink. I wanted to use it as a dedicated highlight pen for work notes, but it's so fine it's almost hard to read. So I'm going to try out a different ink to see if it's just a ink flow issue as I have not had this issue with other inks. Preppy pens are inexpensive, so you can get a bunch and load them with dedicated colors.

Great Nib - Terrible Plastic Housing didn't last a month Threads Won't Hold

Disappointing - Used only at home - the threads won't hold the cartridge in when I snap the cap off to write. I tried wrapping in plumbers tape to no avail. I am new to pens Earlier bought a medium and a fine as well as this extra fine. Hopefully the others will lastMoved the extra fine to the medium case colors don't match but can use the preferred nib anyway. I really like the nibs there is a point where inexpensive becomes expensive less than a months use??? Oh well Love Goulet and their product offerings anuway.

Little Workhorse Pens

The Preppy pens are my every day pens. They come super fine, they write every time you take the cap off, and that cap is the most effective of any I've tried in keeping the nib fresh in our incredibly dry desert environment. I have many pens I love, but they don't weather this climate--or the altitude changes--nearly as well as the Preppy. So mostly I look at them and sigh, and then pick up the Preppy.

Writes Smoothly

A nice inexpensive pen with good flow and writes smoothly! The EF nib is slightly larger than my EF Pilot Kakuno. I love that the cap keeps the ink sealed very well. I find that ink does not evaporate from this pen even when the pen has not been used in a while.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I fill this fountain pen from an ink cartridge? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

A cartridge is small, disposable, sealed plastic reservoir that holds fountain pen ink. These come pre-filled with ink, and typically you just push to insert them into place and you'll be ready to write!

This pen uses proprietary Platinum ink cartridges, which are available in a few colors.

You can learn more about how to actually install an ink cartridge on our blog, or in this video tutorial:

How do I use a converter? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

A converter goes in the place of where the ink cartridge would normally go. From there, you can fill your fountain pen from bottled ink.

A converter is a detachable and refillable ink reservoir that allows you to use bottled ink in a cartridge-accepting pen. Typically you will install the converter into the grip section, dip the nib/feed into the ink, and twist or pull the converter knob to draw ink into the converter.

We have a great video showing how to use a converter here:

How do I clean this fountain pen? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It mostly comes down to flushing out the pen with water, and sometimes a little bit of pen flush if the ink is really stuck.

We put together a blog post with step-by-step instructions, or you can watch the video here:

We recommend a good cleaning every 2 weeks, and any time you change ink colors. Water will usually do the trick, but we recommend you use our Goulet Pen Flush if the ink has been left in the pen for a while and could have dried up, or when you’re switching ink colors.

For even more information about fountain pen cleaning, check out our Fountain Pen 101 video blog post.
