This Namiki Emperor urushi lacquered fountain pen was created by maki-e artisans (kokkokai) in Japan. It features the Roiro Urushi technique in solid black. This fountain pen has a 18k gold nib in the massive #50 size. The large capacity barrel fills with ink via eyedropper, and the pen comes packaged in a wooden box with a bottle of ink. Each pen takes months to create.

The Emperor Collection is Namiki's highest ranking series. The body is shaped with ebonite.

As these pens are truly one-of-a-kind pieces of art, they are warrantied for life by Namiki.

Please allow us up to several extra days for shipping of this pen. Please also note we are unable to accept a return of this pen for any reason once it has been used with ink. Please thoroughly inspect and dry test the pen before use.

Sword in a Box

OM Gosh, upon opening the wooden box, I was just shocked at the size of this pen. It's a Large pen, fortunately for me I have Large hands. This pen is mesmerizing, my eyes opened as large as cup saucers. Oh, don't get me wrong I love it. IT'S absolutely beautiful. The most expensive pen I have ever owned. Upon removing the cap, the revealed Nib looked like a Viking Broad Sword. It's very impressive and gorgeous. The workmanship on this pen is like nothing I've ever seen.
Of all the features I am most impressed with though is the ink cap on the barrel. It's so well made that I really thought they had left that feature out. It's married so well with the pen body I didn't ever think it was there and I thought I had bought an imperfect pen. Lo and behold it's a work of art and so well made it's impossible to see until you unscrew it. IM VERY IMPRESSED WITH the PEN. Thank you Goulet Pens.

Expensive, but worth it

Not for small hands, and the eyedropper fill method is unusual, but I love it. Lovely to write with - good ink flow and comfortable in my hand; beautiful; surprisingly light given its size. Amortized over a several decades, what’s a few thousand dollars? :)

When your grail pen sucks

I had been looking at the Namiki Emperor for 2-3 years. Last month I finally had the money and after watching countless YouTube videos about it, I pulled the trigger. Huge disappointment. Let's talk about the size of this thing. First, I like big pens and on paper the Emperor is only slightly larger than one of my other pens. However, the Emperor crosses the threshold for me. My hand would cramp using it. I've been forcing myself to use it everyday and I'm starting to get used to its size. The real problem with this pen is the way it writes. Mine is mediocre at best. I've literally owned Lamy Safaris that write better than this!I wanted to return the pen by the end of the first day. Unfortunately, GP doesn't allow returns on Namiki products. If I sell it I would have to take upwards of a $1,000 bath on it. I will keep it and continue forcing myself to use it. I have to get my money's worth somehow. If you are more of a user than a collector like me, look elsewhere. Much better can be had for a fraction of the price.

FAQs about Fountain Pens

How do I fill a fountain pen with ink? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It depends on the pen's filling mechanism, which you can find in the Technical Specs section above.

Here's a quick definition of the most common filling mechanisms:

  • Cartridge - A small, disposable, sealed plastic reservoir that holds fountain pen ink. These come pre-filled with ink, and typically you just push to insert them into place and you'll be ready to write! Check out our quick guide here.
  • Converter - A detachable and refillable ink reservoir that allows you to use bottled ink in a cartridge-accepting pen. Typically you will install the converter into the grip section, dip the nib/feed into the ink, and twist or pull the converter knob to draw ink into the converter. Here's a video for how to fill a cartridge/converter pen using a LAMY pen as an example.
  • Eyedropper - A pen that utilizes the entire barrel as a reservoir for ink. Ink is directly filled into the barrel, allowing for a high ink capacity. Here's a video on how to do it!
  • Piston - A type of filling system that uses a retracting plunger inside a sealed tube to draw ink into a pen. They are typically either twist or push-operated. These pens cannot accept cartridges or a converter, and only fill from bottled ink.
  • Vacuum - A push-style piston that uses pressure to fill the large pen body with ink. They seal the ink chamber when closed, making it ideal for flying without risk of leaking. Check out our video on how to use a vac filler here.

How do I clean a fountain pen? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It depends on the filling mechanism, but it mostly comes down to flushing it out with water, and sometimes a little bit of Pen Flush if the ink is really stuck.

It's a bit easier to show than to tell, so we've put together a few quick videos showing you the process:

How often do I need to clean my fountain pen? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

We recommend a good cleaning every 2 weeks, and any time you change ink colors.

Water will usually do the trick, but we recommend you use our Goulet Pen Flush if the ink has been left in the pen for a while and could have dried up, or when you’re switching ink colors.

My pen won’t write! What do I do? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

First things first... make sure you have ink in the pen! Be sure that the ink cartridge or converter is seated properly in the pen, and that you aren't out of ink.

We always recommend you give your pen a good cleaning first, using our Goulet Pen Flush, or a drop of dish soap in some water. New pens often have some machining oil residue left in the feed, so a good cleaning often does the trick first.

If that still doesn't work, try priming the feed. This consists of either dipping your pen nib and feed in ink, or forcing ink from the converter down into the feed.

If it’s still not working after that, please reach out to us so we can help!

What's your return policy? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

To initiate a return, please submit a request at the Return Portal. Our Customer Care team might reach out to you for more information.

Please note we are unable to accept a return of any Namiki or Sailor Bespoke fountain pen for any reason once it has been used with ink. Please thoroughly inspect and dry test the pen before use.
