Kabazaiku, or cherry bark woodworking art work, is a traditional Japanese art work which fluorished in Kaunodate in Akita prefecture of Japan. The technique was used 250 years ago by Samurai warriors to decorate their weapons. The same uncompromising spirit of quality and workmanship has been handed down the generations to the producer of the 'Kabazaiku" Cherry Bark – Denshiro Shouten. Each pen shows a unique pattern of wild Cherry bark and gives a warm, natural feeling in the hands.

The barrel and cap are made of brass, with a wild cherry bark covering, complemented by gold-plated accents. The fountain pen comes equipped with Sailor's legendary 14k gold nib with 24kt gold plating in medium. It comes in an exclusive gift box with a 50ml bottle of Sailor Black ink and an ink converter.

Excellent in many ways, except....

I love the pen, except for one thing. After a year of regular use (once I tuned it up, it writes great), the threads on the section have stripped. It is now a very good-looking desk-only pen. With fiddling around, I can get it on just enough to keep the cap on while it's sitting on the desk. I don't know if this is something that is common on Sailor pens, but if it is, this will be the only Sailor that I will get.

Imperfection perfected

First of all, this medium nib is more like a Lamy Fine in size, so consider that if you are thinking of buying. For the pen, itself, the wood is really the highlight, and it's a high point even compared to some other wood pens. Just from Goulet, I have a Conklin All-American Olivewood and a Monteverde Monza Ebony wood. The Monza wood is so smooth and polished that it almost feels like it's plastic or resin instead which, though highly refined, makes one wonder what is the point of using wood. The Conklin is less polished but also very smooth and retains a nice, natural look. The Sailor Kabazaiku is on an entirely different level. The wood selected shows a lot of knotty areas that break up the cherry color, giving it a natural look that appears less refined and more wild. The wood is polished, but there are areas that have a slightly rougher feeling, breaking up the polish and giving the wood a more natural and exciting feel when writing with it. It might seem like it's an accident or incomplete, but once you write with it, the feeling will tell you that this was a deliberate choice. I cleaned it one time using the new Sailor cleaning kit, and it wrote perfectly. The nib offers a tiny amount of scratchy feedback. I had concerns I wouldn't like this, but it's just enough to make you feel like you are working, which I found to be satisfying.

Beautiful-looking pen, good feel, lovely nib, flimsy convertor.

Pleasant surprise!

This pen is amazing! It looks classy and fits nicely in the hand while writing. The pen writes very smooth, which shouldn't be surprising, since it is a Sailor. The thing is, no one talks about this particular model. To top it off, the beautiful wood finish makes it an elegant piece to write with. Love it!!

Beautiful pen

The pen is gorgeous. The pen's weight is substantial and you can feel some character in the wood. The nib is smooth and the feed can keep up, even when writing quickly.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I fill this fountain pen from an ink cartridge? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

A cartridge is small, disposable, sealed plastic reservoir that holds fountain pen ink. These come pre-filled with ink, and typically you just push to insert them into place and you'll be ready to write!

This pen uses proprietary Sailor ink cartridges, which are available in a wide range of colors.

You can learn more about how to actually install an ink cartridge on our blog, or in this video tutorial:

How do I use a converter? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

A converter goes in the place of where the ink cartridge would normally go. From there, you can fill your fountain pen from bottled ink.

A converter is a detachable and refillable ink reservoir that allows you to use bottled ink in a cartridge-accepting pen. Typically you will install the converter into the grip section, dip the nib/feed into the ink, and twist or pull the converter knob to draw ink into the converter.

We have a great video showing how to use a converter here:

How do I clean this fountain pen? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It mostly comes down to flushing out the pen with water, and sometimes a little bit of pen flush if the ink is really stuck.

We put together a blog post with step-by-step instructions, or you can watch the video here:

We recommend a good cleaning every 2 weeks, and any time you change ink colors. Water will usually do the trick, but we recommend you use our Goulet Pen Flush if the ink has been left in the pen for a while and could have dried up, or when you’re switching ink colors.
